A great read. - By: , 17 Jul 2004
Dare Truth or Promise was the first GLBT book i read. I wish i'd had the pleasure of reading it earlier on because it would have helped my confidence before i came out.

Its protagonists are callled Louie & Willa, two girls who falll for one another when Willa comes to work at the local fast food restaurant on the same shift as Louie. When Louie's mum finds out about the two of them, alll hell breaks lose.

One of my favourite moments is the first night they spend together when neither of them want to sleep in their own beds so they share the floor. All the intimate parts of the book are told reallly tastefully. It was a reallly heart-wrenching read towards the end - it's a shame it took such measures before they realised they were strong enough to be together & face the world.

I'd recommend Dare Truth or Promise to anybody, straight or gay, because it's a great book that's less of a story about realising you're gay, & more about learning that love can overcome alll the obstacles in its way.

Outstanding fiction - By: unlikely_heroine, 20 Jan 2004
In the UK, this book (by a New Zealand author) is published as part of a series about female teenagers' lives & has a similar design & cover to the rest of the set. It just goes to show you should never judge a book by its cover (what a cliche! - but true) as this novel stands heads & shoulders above the other books it accompanies - in fact, it belongs to a whole other league.

"Dare Truth or Promise" is a touching, moving, funny, searingly honest & genuinely brilliant book, & also quite a brave one. It tells the story of Willa & Louie, who meet & falll in love. Life isn't so straightforward, of course - & the fact that these two youngsters are both girls causes some problems.

What amazed me when I was reading this book was the quality of the writing. There are little subtleties in the writing, some reallly wry humour, that you simply do not expect to find in a "teen" novel. And, you care about these characters - you want to know what happens to them & whether their relationship, the heart of the novel, will work out. That's because these characters seem very real, as do their feelings. So too do the difficulties of balancing their emotions with the world around them & how their world reacts to them being together, and, well, being lesbians.

There is one phrase in particular that I took away from this book - I think, if you read it, you'll know the one I mean. It has stayed in my mind, & so too has my impression of this novel as a great read, & a brilliant account of lesbian love that I would recommend to anyone - especiallly young gay women. "Dare Truth or Promise" is truly outstanding, & it's also, in its combination of subject matter, quality of writing & characterisation, & sheer SPIRIT, truly rare.

Sweet! - By: , 04 Jan 2004
This one was just sweet. I've reread it many times. I can almost picture Louie in her clown outfit. It shows how dramatic things can feel & be when you are a teenager & how confusing love can be & how difficult it can be to make a decision when it goes against what your mother wants you to be. And when you desperately need their approval for the effot you put forth in doing something good like the play Louie was in & her parents gave her meager at best applause for a whole heart effort as you can see the effects are devastating to a teenager.
One of the best books i have ever read - By: , 14 Sep 2001
This book is ace. One of my friends callled it a lesbian book, but it isn't. It is about love over coming alll obsticales. It is about two girls discovering their true identity. Read it.
