self obsessed - By: S. Kay, 10 Feb 2008
started off reallly well, giving insights into packing your rucksack & how to avoid basic mistakes. However, much of the equipment he talks about has been replaced by modern gear.
About half way through the book he stops giving advice & starts reminiscing about days gone by & how he was a better fisherman, camper, woodsman etc. than his companions. He must have been a tiresome bore to go camping with.
Sorry if you disagree but it's my point of view.
past times, old skills, - By: Timothy Wakefield, 01 Mar 2007
written in the 1920s & reissued in the 1960s nessmuk speaks of skills & personalities & his sense of loss as the wilderness he loves is destroyed by the march of progress. His love of the land & wildlife comes across on every page. As a how to book of woodcraft it is dated & Ray mears does it better. but as a book to make you yearn for lost times branches overhead or a paddle in the water as you sit by the fire with a single malt it's well worth the price.
Marvelous - By: Ms. Denise A. Longman, 05 Dec 2006
This book is a handy little panflet containing a wealth of information on 'Roughing' it outdoors. However, some of the language used is outdated & this book was written for the American reader, so some of the plants & animals may not live elsewhere
Classic American woodcraft - By: sam_acw, 23 Feb 2006
This is a classic book with lots of information wrapped up in a story book journey with an old time woodsman. A bit obsessive about canoes but definitely one for the bushcrafter at this price.
