Useful if doing extensive optical emission studies - By: Barry Twomey, 09 Jul 2008
I got the book with a view to answering alll my optical emission questions. Unfortunately, it wasn't able to but that may have been more to do with the questions I was asking. As a relative novice to optical emission, I wasn't to sure what to get & this book seemed to top the list.

In short, it is a 45 page introduction to the theory of optical emission followed by several hundred pages of elemental data, comparable to a phone book. It does not cover molecular species or species in a negative state (or at least that's what I have observed).

The data is laid out well given the amount that is included. This includes relative intensity & transition information on each value presented but no transition energies. The CD is partiallly useful but has a limited interface & comes across a bit dated.

To conclude, if you need an extensive reference at hand, it is a great thing to have close by. It can be a bit easier to glance through the pages instead of searching through the NIST Atomic Spectra listings. For molecular data I would recommend 'R. W. B Pearse & A. G. Gaydon, "The identification of molecular spectra".
