Good introduction - By: PhilosopherKing, 14 Nov 2008
The 'Dummies' series provide a good introduction to a subject. They are useful for either beginners or for people requiring a quick refresher. They are sometimes funny but the jokes can also be corny at times. They are not likely to make one an expert on a subject but they are a good relaxed read.
British History was good for an overalll revision but many topics seemed oversimplified to me.
Excellent book by a highly regarded and talented historian!!! - By: Lee Johnson, 01 Nov 2008
This book is an extremely interesting tour of British history. Dr Sean Lang is a highly regarded historian currently lecturing at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. He writes with such clarity & in an informative but excitable lexis.
I have got to know Sean Lang very well over the past few weeks & rate him so highly. This book is such a clear whistle stop tour of British history including: Enlgand, Ireland, Scotland & Wales incorporating the struggles, achievements & advancements in the wealth of history that Britain has to explore that will inspire & captivate the reader.
This is a perfect book to brush up on your knowledge of history, & use this as a stepping stone to explore in greater detail.
Good read but factually poor - By: J. Philip, 19 Sep 2008
I reallly enjoyed reading this book until I came to a chapter I already knew something about. At that point I realised that there were quite a number of factual inaccuracies. I then cross-checked another chapter with someone who was an expert on that period. Again, inaccuracies.
So although it is fun to read, witty & fast-paced, I've now lost alll confidence in the factual material. I read this book because I wanted to understand more about British History, I'm now going to buy a book with better academic credentials.
British History for Dummies - By: Mr. DAVID EVANS, 09 Oct 2006
Yet another 'British History' book written from the English perspective. According to the Author (who is apparently Oxford educated - Welsh is still today spoken in parts of North Wales...) well yes it is..along with every other part of the Country. Yet again, our Country, which has contributed so much to the wealth of Britain will be relegated to a mere province of England in the minds of anyone who reads this!
Must try harder!
Great intro to our history - By: Pen Name, 24 Aug 2006
This book whisks you through our history with what I thought was just the right balance of hard fact, the author's opinion, & a bit of fun. I read a lot of history & it's not often as enjoyable as this. I wouldn't say that I learned anything new by reading this book - it's not a radical reworking of our country's history - but I enjoyed brushing up on what I know.
There's a good balance between the different time periods, & a mix of social, political, & military info. All in alll, a good read if you like history already, & a good read if you're not into history yet (you might be when you've finsihed it).
One last thing - the author writes reallly nicely, more historians like this please!
