This is a tremendous work of detective fiction; the hero is a complex realistic character, & despite reading this novel out of sequence (it's the third of a series although regrettably Amazon UK don't stock alll of the others)the back story is well established & easy to follow.
The scenes set around the city of Philadelphia are tremendously evocative of a city in decay, & tearing itself apart. Strong contrasts are made between the relatively affluent middle class areas where much of the book takes place & the blighted ghetto areas where our hero occasionallly ventures.
The eventual solution to the mystery is genuinely surprising, & pace is strong & the plot pulls you along. It's a real page turner, but one that will also make you think & in particular question any knee jerk & stereotypical attitudes that you may have.
I can't recommend this book too highly.
