A Great Conclusion - By: Robbie Swale, 27 Mar 2008
The third book in Mary Stewart's brilliant Merlin Trilogy, The Last Enchantment will not disappoint. It picks up where the previous two novels left off, following Merlin The Enchanter as he guides a young Arthur through the beginnings of his reign, the troubles with his sisters, battles with the Saxons, & intrigue in plenty.
The beauty of Stewart's work here, is that she ties Merlin - a character who is synonymous with magic - to a world in which, although magic features, Merlin is a man. He gets by on wit & luck as often as by magic, & is a thoroughly enjoyable character to read about. She also brings links (as close as she can) to real places & real events, making this a volume which gives you some clue as to how it might have been. Or at least how it should have been.
If you have read The Crystal Cave & the Hollow Hills, you won't be disappointed. If you haven't start there & work your way here for maximum enjoyment. If you've read the books before, then pick them up again - I just have after four or five years, & they are just as good a second time round!
Haunting and evocative - By: D. Adamson, 20 May 2007
The Merlin Trilogy perfectly captures the tensions & dynamics of the Arthur myths without ever resorting to turgid & boring. Mary Stewart's writing is beautiful; almost flawless in the way it weaves plot, character & setting. These three books are worth every second you'll spend reading them.
Fantasy once more - By: , 03 Dec 2001
What pleasure Mary Stewart has given us over the years & this series about the life & times of Merlin, the magician who was chief adviser to the legendary King Arthur, is no exception. How wonderfully Stewart is able to weave her magic in the myth that surrounds the era of Camelot. Best to read the two earlier episodes in this saga first though. These are dateless & enduring but remember it is only fiction.
