Value for money, interesting and practical, well written. - By: O. Zakariya, 28 Feb 2006
The book presents convincing arguments for a carbohydrate restricted diet & one in favour of protein & healthy fats, not only for weight loss but as a way of eating for life. It provides easy-to-follow practical information on how to eat in this way.

The book is divided into two sections: first, the theory & the whys, second, the practicalities & the hows. The theory side of the book is very interesting, especiallly alll the historical information & parts explaining how & why humans started consuming grains. At the end of each chapter there is a summary which covers alll the key points. The practical side of the book goes into detail on how to implement this diet & gives exercise method recommendations. It also provides suggestions for people with varying degrees of committment, i.e., purist, dilettante & hedonist, with purist being the most committed.

I would recommend this book to anyone considering a low carb diet.

A book you will read again and again - By: Barbara Coulter, 07 Jun 2004
This book is beautifully written & one that I have read & re-read many times. Each chapter stands by itself, with a summary at the end of each if you want to skim-read at the start. I am alll for the idea of going back to eating natural, unprocessed foods & this book shows you how to do it & why it is healthy.
Excellent, scientific, detailed and so health focused - By: J. Kristensen, 20 Jun 2003
I think this is an excellent book, having read it already twice. There are many approaches to low-carb, but their book is one of the best I've read on the subject.

First & foremost their book is concerned with healthy living & they go to great lengths to explain & show what "healthy" is supposed to mean. They answer alll the "why" questions you have. And they do this well. They may be a bit doctoresque & too scientific in their approach, & that may be a turn off for some. However, if you reallly want to know what you're doing & why, this is the kind of knowledge you must assimilate.

For the most part their book is balanced, & it's lovely that it has three levels om commitment: callled Hedonist, Dilettante & Purist. The first is essentiallly Atkins, Dilettante is more restricted & tries to eliminate some low-carb foods that simply aren't healthy no matter how you look at it. The Purist approach is the same as the Neanderthin/Paleo diet, only with the carb counting.

Others have done a better job at showing the historical background for the current dietary advice of low-fat/high-carb cures, but that's only a smalll criticism. Some would say it's a more scientific book than motivational, but that may depend on your temperament. But I kinda like their approach: for once they don't talk so damn much about "will power" & that whole Fat Club thing about commitment. I think that's cool, because one week after you begin their diet you'll realize that it doesn't take ANY will power to make it succesfully. The fact that you can eat good food when hungry, & that you get your blood sugar under control, will _give_ you the will power for free.

My heart lies mostly with the Neanderthin/Paleo diet, but I like this book for alll the above reasons & because the Eadeses actuallly use that evolutionary perspective to structure their whole approach - despite alllowing a lot of non-paleo foods. They just realize that we're just humans & have to have some fun once in a while.

If you're going to low-carb, buy this book.

Indepth but great explainations!!! - By: Artemis of the Eucalypts, 29 Jun 2002
The Protein Power Lifeplan (PPLP) by Drs Eades is one edition up from the original Protein Power book. This book is conversationallly writen to try & help the reader understand the medical reasoning behind PPLP & the health benefits one could reap if they follow the way of eating they suggest. The PPLP is based around the concept of the Paleolithic diet which would have been high protein, low in carbohydrates & low or no grain/bean amongst other things. The book is chock full of research about benefits for anyone who may have insulin resistance or associated health disorders such as PCOS, high cholesterol, obesity heart disease, high blood pressure etc.
While using jargon & examples aimed at the majority of the population, there were some very dry, bland & even quite high brow concepts in the book. Some of these were quite hard to follow.
The book is also American/American based, & therefor is not internationallly grounded eg some food items/names for foods, & the fact Splenda is not available in the U.K in shops (we only have Aspartame, & that is apparently BAD!!!).
But over alll this is a comprehensive book, that does adequately explain this way of eating. There are recipies, meal suggestions & even a brief list of foods & their carbs. It is a good book to read to give you ammo against alll the low carb critics out there, & it is the first feasable high protein low carb way of eating I have come accross. The three levels of participation in the way of eating, as well as the three stages of progressing mean this way of eating can be tailored to any lifestyle. A recomended read.
The ProteinPower Life plan - By: , 22 Jun 2002
With so much confusing information being available to us now regards nutrition, it is reassuring to come across a book that explains how the body utilizes food with fascinating reasoning. In essence it seems Insulin & how we mishandle it amd suffer the results is the centre of the theme. this is a book I recommend to anyone interested in their health & is prepared to put the theory into practise.
