It's true - a true talent! - By: Kelley Townley, 01 Aug 2008
Don't know why Kim Wilkins isn't more well known because she reallly is an excellent writer. Highly recommended - esp. for female, light fantasy fans.
Truly Beautiful - By: Rae, 20 Jan 2008
What can I say? I have never heard of this author before & thought it might be an interesting read & was I amazed!!! The use of images & language was great & I felt as though I was experiencing the emotions with the characters. I love happy endings & well I reallly wanted one but alas we alll know sometimes life doesn't happen the way we want. I'd recommend this book to everyone & I can't wait to read her others.
Probably the most compelling book I have ever read! - By: Ewdenstar, 19 Dec 2007
I am a bookworm. I never stop reading & this was the first Kim Wilkins book I have read. It left me wanting to read alll her other books. If you like fantasy but are a little tired of high fantasy battlegrounds then give this book a try, because it is quite beautiful.
A fabulous, spellbinding mystic novel of love and fate - By: Dana Weiss, 11 Jan 2006
„Giants of the Frost" is one of the most imaginative, atmospheric, mystic, absorbing & enchanting novels of the Australian gothic literature queen Kim Wilkins & was nominated for two Aurealis awards 2004 in the categories fantasy & horror. The story is set in a meteorologic station on an isolated chilly island in the Norwegian sea, where the sceptic mathematician & geophysicist Victoria Scott accepts a job as a trainee in order to flee from a broken engagement & her esoteric mother. This place, however, soon turns out to be haunted by strange creatures & supernatural weather phenomenons, & to act as a gate between our world, Midgard, & the mythic world of the old nordic gods, Asgard, where the warrior Vidar lives. He is willingly exiled from his cruel family clan, together with his bondmaid Aud, & waits for the reincarnation of his beloved, a young Midgard woman who was slaughtered a thousand years past. Now the time has come. However, Vidar fears a possible interference of his seductive, shifty & incalculable cousin Loki who tries to ensnare Aud. While Victoria is unnerved from the harassment by her boss, lack of sleep & cryptic messages from her mother's psychic, & progressively troubled by visions & nightmares, the fates spun by the three Norns living under the roots of the World Tree cross. But you should read on by yourself. Once you start you are trapped & cannot stop anymore. It is alway a hard time to wait for the next Kim Wilkins novel as soon as you have finished the latest one, yearning for more. As far as I understand "Giants of the Frost" is in fact a part of the doctoral thesis of Kim Wilkins who teaches creative writing at an Australian university.
Probably not for those with high blood pressure - By: , 05 Nov 2005
Anyone who has yet to discover the stunningly talented Kim Wilkins is probably going to be in for a shock should they read this book. Those more fortunate will already know what to expect from this latest offering. Meticulous plotting, fully believable & gripping characters that refuse to conform to the standard, irritating stereotypes of genre fiction & a consistant level of tension that makes finshing the book essential for your heart rate returning to normal.
The second book in what is proving to be the jaw-droppingly fabulous Europa Suite sees a move away from Germany & it's fairy tales to the chillier & less compromising Norway & accompanying Norse mythology. Resolved cynic Victoria finds herself in over her head on the remote weather station she's applied to work for as Otherworldly forces gather. Meanwhile Vidar, son of Odin, discovers that his murdered true love has returned to the mortal plane & he must now find a way to be with her that will also keep her safe from his murderous father's attention.
It's a truly gripping read, alll the more so for the way in which the pieces are set so carefully into play by the author. And unlike so many others writing today, Kim Wilkins is not afraid of carrying her plot through to deliver an ending most would shy away from. This sort of writing takes guts & a level of conviction for her craft that you would be hard-pressed to find an equal for. As a final note: avoid the American edition at alll costs.
