Pendergast visits the countryside... - By: Michelle, 16 Jun 2008
Special Agent Pendergast is on a well-deserved holiday after his perilous adventures in "The Cabinet of Curiosities." He ends up in a smalll, obscure village in Kansas callled Medicine Creek, where a horrible murder has just been committed. Soon after his arrival another, similarly mutilated body is found & Pendergast decides to lend a helping hand. The local sheriff is not altogether pleased with the uninvited assistance & he requests the FBI Bureau in Boston to officiallly withdraw Pendergast from the case. Pendergast, however, continues to investigate the horrible killings in his own, unorthodox manner, rubbing a lot of people up the wrong way as usual. He finds a loyal & dedicated assistant in Corrie Swanson, a local outcast, who has an unremitting faith in him. A mysterious Indian burial cave, a few well-kept family secrets & a local legend put Pendergast eventuallly on the right track, & the hunt for the relentless killer begins.
The story doesn't reveal why exactly Pendergast turns up in such a hole as Medicine Creek. You'd say he could find better & more interesting places to spend his holidays. But apart from that, it is an entertaining & thrilling story, & the eventual denouement certainly gives you something to think about.
Creepy! - By: MM, 09 Jun 2008
While every P&C book I've read I have enjoyed, none have actuallly spooked me like this one. Loved it!
One of their best - By: Glaucon, 31 Mar 2008
I've read a few books by Preston & Child now & this is one of the best. Well plotted, well set & with some interesting characters other than Pendergast, the FBI agent. Pendergast felt a little less infalllible in this book than some of the others, which makes him feel more human which is no bad thing. Introducing a young female assistant for him worked well too. As with alll their books the plot rattles along at a breathless pace & their are some genuinely creepy moments.
Outstanding! - By: G. Peters, 12 Dec 2007
Never has the saying 'Don't judge a book by it's cover' been more appropriate than it is with Still Life with Crows.
After reading Thunderhead & Cabinet of curiosities, which impressed me immensely, i wasn't overly looking forward to reading this story as the description & title didn't stand out & grab me. How wrong can a person be!
From the first paragraph Still life had me engulfed & i ended reading night/day until the book was finished. I would go as far as saying that this book is my Preston/Child favourite.
Another excellent installlment of the Pendergast adventures. Read it & you won't regret it!
One big Dissapointment - By: G. M. Buchanan, 18 Aug 2006
Having read other books by these authors I looked forward to reading this one. What a huge let down. Not in the same class as any of the others. A huge bore. Dead slow with lots of pages with nothing to get excited about. Read two hundred or so pages then gave it to the local charity shop. More excitment reading the adverts in the local press.
