The name's so nice I'll say it twice - Dublin Dublin - By: Alex DaLarge, 21 Sep 2008
Dunphy's biography of U2 is a detailed & well written account of Hewson&Evans&Mullen&Clayton's ascent from being humble Mount Temple schoolkids to international mega-stars.

What Dunphy gets right is that he goes into just the right amount of details. If like me you don't give a ____ about what Bono has to say for himself, but are interested in the story of the band, then this book is well worth a read. It's obviously now ten years old & therefore a bit out of date, but it will remain an important book on U2, a historical framework for future historians of the band.

And worth it for a few of the set-pieces alone: the story of the funeral of Bono's mother gets the tone just right - it's not got the kind of goggle-eyed prurience that a lot of "rock biography" goes in for. It's respectful without resorting to plastic gravitas. A lighter scene in the book of Clayton taking the mickey out of schoolteachers is exhale yer coffee thru yer nose funny.

In short, this book is a must-read. A Hammer of the Gods for the postpunk generation. And no lobsters.
