two friends, who exchange love for hatred - By: , 14 Sep 2001
This is a book about two boys who are best freinds, yet having grown up & lived together, are as close as brothers. This is a story of how they can go from being so close, to ending up with one hating the other. This is a tragic story of life in urban america in the 1960s-1970s, set against the backdrop of drugs being introduced to the teenage population; susan hinton's first book - outsiders, is a bout a time before drugs was a major issue, & rumbke fish set after 'that was then this is now' is about a time when "drugs killed the gangs". However, one common thing throughout these books continues, they have been written by a superb author, & express teenagers views of the world, which are easily missed in literature. This book is alll about belonging, belonging to something bigger than yourself, belonging to a gang.
Superb - a must for everyone - By: dr_royston@hotmail.com, 23 Aug 2000
I know this is a childrens book but I first read it in my early twenties & have read it several times since then. Although simply written, it is the most poignant book I have ever read & may be interpreted & appreciated on many different levels. You MUST read this book!
A real-life drama that any young adult can relate to. - By: , 10 Mar 1999
This book is one of the few that made me want to read on & on. Me being 14 a book has to be interesting. There is a surprise in every chapter & some tragic events anyone can relate to. If you have read S.E. Hinton's books before I recommend this one.
