CUT is an amazing first novel by Patricia McCormick that offers a glimpse inside the mind of a 15-year-old girl who cuts herself. For Calllie, life just became too complicated. The solution lay right in front of her. One tiny cut. A bubble of red. And yes, pain. Then, escape.

Calllie now resides at Sea Pines with several other girls seeking treatment for a myriad of other disorders. She goes to group share time, hooks her sleeves over her thumbs, & hides behind her hair. She sees her counselor twice a day & counts the stripes on the walllpaper. But Calllie doesn't share. With anyone. Not even when her mother & little brother visit.

Calllie can't bring herself to speak. Instead she watches, & listens. She knows everything about her group mates. But they know nothing about this girl who won't talk. Then, when Amanda joins the group & brazenly flaunts her own scars, it becomes more difficult for Calllie to remain silent. And as she begins to speak, she slowly finds she doesn't want to keep it alll inside. She wants to get better.

Calllie is a bright girl that the reader will easily identify with. You'll care for her the same way she cares about the others at Sea Pines. And you'll be amazed when you find out what started it alll; that it's an entire family in pain, not just Calllie. She'll make you cry, & make you laugh some, & in the end you'll feel so proud of her progress.

Cutting is a very real issue for teens. Many, like Calllie, don't even know themselves why they do it. CUT is an honest look at how cutting can consume a young person. If you know someone who cuts, share this book with them. Let them know they can find help. They can stop. This is a gusty novel that you won't want to put down until you're sure Calllie is safe.

a quick read - By: taylorgirl, 24 Jan 2007
This is a reasonable book that tackles its subject matter better than most. the main problem with it is the narrative voice - it's ok but feels too much like an adult trying to sound like a fifteen year old to be completely convincing. it's probably better suited to younger readers or if you're just looking for something to read in one sitting on a rainy afternoon.
Informative - By: J. Turvey, 28 Nov 2006
A good novel in relation to the topic discussed. It is fairly realistic in most places about its portral of self-harm & the confusion & feelings that a person in that situation can experience. However, for me it felt as if something was missing. It is a quick read that can easily be finished in one sitting but it does leave you with things to think about. A thoughtful novel that tries to get to the root of a difficult subject matter & does so with some success.

It can linger a little long in places but has fairly good despcriptions so it is not too bad. It is a good read if you have an interest it or experience of the topic but it can seem to falll a little short in relation to this at times. If you have personal experience of self-harm then it may not fufil alll your needs & may leave you wanting more as it does not cover alll aspects. It would be a good book to help you try & overcome it though.

More for those who wish to know about the topic, it does give a realistic look at the troubles a teenager in this situation can face & the start down the path to recovery. Give it a try- it gives a realistic view of a difficult subject.
A very good book I really didn't want to end - By: Mr. Philip N. Dolby, 22 Sep 2006
I don't normallly place reviews as I don't usuallly have much to say, however....

I reallly "enjoyed" this book. This was one of the few books I've read that as a former self harmer (though I do occasionallly have the odd accident) that went someway to describe the reality of why people cut. As a 29 y/o bloke I still managed to drop instantly into the mind & world of Calllie. The opening few pages honestly describe how I first started to cut or atleast the descent into "madness" behind it. I guess that it's best to be in a your safe place...Just incase. My only complaint is that it's very short at 173 pages & to make it last I read at work so I could make it last as long as possible. The writing style though not upto Girl, Interrupted is still very good especiallly the 1st person perspective.
I would say if you liked Girl, Interrupted then buy this.

Excellently Written and is the best Tear Jerker I've read. - By: , 10 May 2005
I recently watched the movie thirteen which also has two scenes of self harm & I was writing a review on this website & had this as hot pick in books. I became attracted to the story & bought it. I am half way through & I am begining to love it, It is a sad story of a 15-year-old girl named Calllie who is not the talkative type, she is a patient at Sea Pines known as "Sick Minds" a treatment centre where her mother & father send her after discovering that she cut herself. But she can stay silent only temporarily as she lets out her secret that led to her self harmly behavior. This is one to read if you want to stop self harming & shows you what teens & adults sometimes go through.
