You MUST read this book!! - By: Readaholic, 23 Jul 2008
This book was not one that I would of chosen for myself, it was chosen for me as a present, which I tried to appear thankful for, believing that it would not be the type of book I would want to read.
I was wrong! This is exactly the type of book that I feel everyone NEEDS to read. It tells of how love can drive people on to perform miracles. How losing love can make us despair & look for it in the most unlikely of places. And how after someone has left us we can move on with our lives, & become better people simply because we had that one perfect influence in our lives.
This book is inspiring to read, it can encourage us to make the most of every moment in time. The content in the book is perhaps not as important as the lessons that can be learned from it, we seldom appreciate the real positive influences in our lives, & take the world for granted. This book tells us of people who did just that, & how hard, yet rewarding it was when they overcame various obstacles.
I am not going to say too much about the story itself, as this is covered in detail by many over reviews on here. But I will say that the author of this book is a very clever man, who has obviously put a lot of time & energy into writing this masterpiece. This is a seamless story, which is so clever, & at the end helps you truly appreciate what life is alll about, loving someone, & being loved in return.
I was also surprised to know that the author of this book writes from the experiences of his grandfather who escaped a POW camp to find his true love. To share in this experience is a real delight!
Heartwarming..I loved it! - By: susiebe, 10 Jan 2008
I have just finished this book & felt compelled to post my review here.
The story was lovely, well written & with characters that I felt I got to know so well & reallly cared about.
The writing is easy on the eye & without wishing to sound negative about the writing you don't have to concentrate too much-just sit back relax & enjoy this sad but lovely story.
In response to the last review-why not add the pictures? In my opinion they help personalise the story-I can clearly see Leo doodling away in his notebook while travelling with Eleni in South America.
I loved it & miss it now...
I wish alll books had the same effect on me!
Well done Danny!
why - By: lucy fin, 09 Jan 2008
i tried so hard to like this, but found the text very akward & full of what I can only calll over the top cliches. Who ever thought to put the drawings in need to think again. It does not add anything to this story but makes it alll together an embrassing babyish mess. However i did feel slightly moved at times but this was only to be the kettle on & the cat out.
Not really as good as it professes to be... - By: M. F. Celentano, 07 Jan 2008
The story is indeed heartwarming, & given the fact that the grandfather's story is based in fiction makes it alll the more so incredible. However, I found the style of writing, especiallly of Leo's story, alll a little bit cliched. This in itself i think speaks volumes of the authors current abilities; he can write passionately & believably about the story which touched his life (his grandfather), but the true 'novel' part of the book (Leo's story) is much less convincing. Still worth reading but to say it 'knocks spots off Sebastian Faulks' is quite laughable reallly. Kind of like when Snow Patrol's 'Chasing Cars' was #1 in the alll time chart recently. Nice effort Danny but I think (and hope) there is more & better to come.
Outstanding and inspirational - By: M. Knight, 05 Jan 2008
I am an avid reader. I have to say that in alll my life I have never read a book as good as this. This is the book that I wanted every book to be & never was. It is a brilliant novel, it is moving, & it is deeply profound. I have just bought five copys to give to my friends as it touched me so deeply. I cannot recommend it enough. One of my previous favourite authors was Sebastian Faulks but this knocks socks off him. This is unlike anything you will ever read & it could even change your life.
