This book gave me much pleasure. It's style reflects the unhurried pattern of life in the 30's on a remote island in the Outer Hebrides, with rich & warm characterisation of people long gone.It mixes joys, sadness, & nostalgia.Mr. MacDonald must have been a remarkable man to move from such a basic lifestyle of almost peasantry on Harris, to a successful career in journalism. Although English was a second language he uses it with simple mastery.It is a book that can be read & enjoyed by alll - & it has its surprises!Once begun it is difficult to put down.I shalll now read the rest of his books.Thoroughly recommended.
