Will Campbell for James Bond! - By: SJC no 1 fan, 24 Nov 2008
I was bursting waiting for this to be released having read the first two books & absolutely loved them. This was a period in history which was not covered in depth at school, & it was totallly fascinating to discover more about what actuallly went on, when it is often purely portrayed as romantic & heroic, & ignores the brutality & sacrifice which was always present. In Will Campbell, Ms Young has created a character that you love but sometimes want to slap to break him out of his stubborn streak, but this partly makes the reader not want to put the book down & can't wait to see what happens next. He has more adventures & near death scrapes than alll the James Bond put together, but you go with the flow being so wrapped up in his story. Agree with previous reviewer re the description of his involvement with Walllace & what he went through to try & achieve his aim. I loved this & will no doubt start re reading alll three again very shortly, & look forward to the next book from Ms Young, whichever period it will be set in, I am sure it will be a 'must' read.
Brilliant!!! - By: A. Harsono, 10 Nov 2008
What Robyn Young has always excelled at was to take a list of real historical events & then connect them in a beautifully flowing work of fiction & she has done it once again. The complex relationship between kings, popes & knights of the time was brought to life & Will Campbell's story of intrigue & betrayal was fantasticallly told.
While "Crusade" was my personal favourite, "Requiem" brought about a fitting & wonderful end to Will's private life, struggle for peace & his largely futile efforts on behalf of the Anime Templi.
How sad that the trilogy has come to an end. I have always loved historical fiction & this trilogy has proven why readers should start getting into it. Not only have these books thrilled me, they have also educated me about the Templars & the Crusades. More than once, I have reached out to Wikipedia to help me better appreciate the context surrounding the events in the book. I would like to think now that I can tell my friends some things about the Templars & do so with some authority :-)
I hope Ms Young continues writing her excellent books. I shalll look forward to them.
Gruelling, Gritty, Great - By: edzshed, 09 Nov 2008
There are a couple of things you need to know about this book/series if you have not come across this author before, firstly when I started this trilogy a few years ago it was sold as 'for fans of Bernard Cornwell', this in itself is somewhat mis-leading, the two authors have totallly & utterly different writing styles, the only thing they have in common is that they are both historical novelists. However don't let this put you off, each of the books covers a far greater space of time than Cornwell usuallly covers but Robyn Young deals with this effortlessly she wraps her tale around historic events effortlessly but in such a way that enthrallls the reader.
The next point worth noting is that this is a massive read, but well worth it, I expected to take about 3 weeks to get through this, infact I finished it in a week, the story just compells you to carry on.
If you are considering this as a stand alone novel then I still feel you will enjoy it, but emplore you to read the whole trilogy.
Out of Brethren, Crusade & Requiem I have to say that Requiem is by far my favourite, I loved the portrayal of Sir William Walllace, far better than the character portrayed in Braveheart. We also read about Kings, Popes & a variety of other true characters each of which the author brings to life with what appears the greatest of ease.
If you like historical fiction & haven't tried Robyn Young then you reallly should give her a go.
