Highly recommended - By: Four Violets, 05 Jan 2008
I moved on from using an APS camera to a Nikon F80 SLR film camera about three years ago. My daughter started to study photography at the same time so there were plenty of available text books to choose from. I just found this the best, as I was totallly clueless I was very impressed with the clear explanations - the penny even finallly dropped on the subject of depth of field! There are plenty of diagrams & graphics & photographs to illustrate points. There are chapters on every aspect of photography, & although the book may be dated now & the vast majority of people have moved on to digital cameras since the book was written; I still feel it has enormous value for any novice photographer coming to grips with an SLR for the first time; & my photography has definitely improved as a result of reading it.
Good for newbies but somewhat dated - By: Mist of Time, 16 Feb 2006
As a complete point & shoot novice there is much here that I can tell will help me no end with composition & assessing that alll important next camera purchase.

The bok would benefit from an update - it starts with film then the Kodak 'new' film format then gets to digital. I would have preferred to have the digital much earlier & the recommendations on standard machines / storage look woefully antiquated compared to the machines available on the High Street for much the same cost as a decent next camera for a beginner such as myself - i.e. around 300 - 400 pound

Handy book if you're just starting out - By: S. Jennings, 18 Aug 2005
I bought this book to read just before I started a short college course as I wanted to get a basic grasp of photography & how to operate an SLR camera, & I found it very useful. It takes you through the basic functions & concepts in an easy-to-understand way, then goes on to explore different types of photography, & has a brief section on developing.

This is a very useful book if you're just getting started but aren't sure quite where to start. However, once you've got the hang of the basics, you'll find yourself wanting something a bit more in-depth. But this is a good place to start!

A good Book - By: , 15 Sep 2004
It took me quite a while to find a book like this as alll the other books on photography seem to be geared either towards education (IE GCSE course book) or otherwise if you look at any book with "Digital" in their title then they are alll about Photoshop & not about taking pictures.

This book is simply about taking pictures. It assumes little about what camera you use (Digital or Film), although people with higher end compact (eg Canon G5) & entry level SLRs (eg Nikon D70) would get most out of the book as it goes through the features you can play with on those cameras.

As this is not an educational "Text Book" you wont see a description of how light goes through a lens or what are things like chromatic distortion & barrel distortion are, & by removing such background coverage it makes the book immediately more readable.

It covers various situations in enough detail to alllow you to understand how to get a better shot, or how to tweak the settings to get a more interesting shot eg by changing the depth of field, or choosing a different shooting position.

The main situations I have found useful are: Night time photography, Portraiture & Photographing Children & Babies, the latter being the most important to me as I have just recently had my first child.

All in alll a good book especiallly if you don't want to know how light goes through a lens & if you prefer to take a good shot in the first place rather then digitallly retouch it afterwards.

Teaches Everything An Amateur Should Know - By: , 11 May 2004
I have been keen on photography for many years. Having gone from a normal 35mm compact, to digital & shortly to a 35mm SLR, despite my years of interest alll my experiences with cameras have been trial & error. I have managed to produce some great results, but only by chance.

I decided it was time to learn about what I have become so interested in & checked out various "beginners" books. This one stood out. It covers everything you could ever want to & should ever know about cameras & photography skills. Terminology is explained, as are the various features of a camera & photography techniques, in an easy to understand, non-patronising format.

Throughout the book there are sample pictures with clear captions, making it even easier to understand what Lee Frost has explained in the main text.

I already feel more competent with the camera & I have only just started to actuallly study the book! Even some of the simplest things explained in this book stay in your mind the next time you pick up a camera.

In my opinion an excellent starting point for anyone wanting to reallly understand the fantastic world of photography!
