Chris & Emily have been good friends since they were born. Their parents have always been friends, & they were destined to become a couple once they entered their teenage years. They are always together & are seemingly very in love.

Until Emily ends up dead, & Chris was the only other person there when she died.

What happens? Will the kids that always seemed so happy rip these families apart? Did Chris reallly kill Emily? What reallly happened the night of her death?

Too much cannot be said without giving away the ending of the story. This is another book from Jodi Picoult that makes you think. There are a few predicable scenes, but still enough twists & turns to keep the reader interested. A good read for someone who is curious about how lives that seem so perfect can change so fast.

Truly Amazing - By: Jennifer Kate, 16 May 2008
I had never read one of Picoult's books before I decided to read 'The Pact' & therefore had no high expectations. However, after the first chapter, I couldn't put the book down. I love the way the chapters go from 'Then' to 'Now', alllowing you to test your own conscience to whether you believed that the character of Chris reallly would have killed his one true love, Emily. Right up until the epilogue, I had no idea how this book would finish, & let me assure you, it has its surprises. Picoult makes you feel like you know the characters, & throughout the book you experience their different emotions as if you were there yourself.

I personallly feel sorry for my parents, of whom I had ranted & raved about how good 'The Pact' is.

'The Pact' isn't just about the suicide pact between Chris & Emily however, yet it describes the others involved & how such an event can show that families who once thought their life was 'perfect', was only fake & superficial, & how parents like to think they know their children inside out, yet the truth is sometimes quite the opposite.

I reallly enjoyed reading this book & to those of you deciding whether or not to buy it, it would be a certain loss if you chose not to read it.
Great but beware of the DVD - By: K.Smith, 06 Apr 2008
i thought this book was brilliant. ive read many of her novels & as with others i couldnt put it down! i loved it so much that when i found out that there was a dvd adaptation i tracked it down & got it as soon as i could. sadly, the dvd was nothing compared to the book. the scences & characters are nothing like you imagine them to be like when reading the book. i would recommend not buying the dvd if youre tempted to.
One of the best books i've read - By: Ms. Lindsay Loudon, 25 Mar 2008
The plot was very engaging & i love the way that she shifts from 'then' to 'now' & back again. There were so many times where I wanted to find out the outcome of a 'then' or 'now' chapter but had to wait to finish the next chapter first! I found myself reallly caring about the characters. A book that is so hard to put down.
OK, but not great - By: Winterbunny, 23 Feb 2008
After reading "My Sisters Keeper" I was eager to read a few more Jodi Picoult novels as I found it a good read. I thought "The Pact" would have a similar impact but I was a tad disappointed. I can't totallly reject this book but I can't rave about it either...

After a thorough & descriptive effort in the earlier parts of the novel, for me the ending was a real shame. It just seemed to end suddenly as the court makes the decision on the case & within a page or 2, it's over with a pitiful eplilogue. I was left with a few unanswered questions & loose ends not tied up which was frustrating. I did enjoy the Harte & Gold relationship descriptions even if I was creeped out by the incestuous relationship between Chris & Emily. It is worth a read though if you are a Jodi Picoult fan, but be warned; it's a little depressing/morbid in parts (suicide/murder anyone?) & a lengthy legal focus which maybe too much for you if you're not in the right frame of mind. If you like a book with a "did he or didn't he" theme throughout, then read on...
