Not worth the effort involved to read it - By: CrinkleCutChip, 21 Mar 2007
I have several times almost bought "The Tenko Club" from bookshops at airports or stations prior to a long journey. I actuallly borrowed it from the public library at last, & am very thankful not to have wasted any money in actuallly purchasing it, although I feel the time spent reading it was completely wasted.
The writing is clichéd in vocabulary, style & content, & the author's English is somewhat dubious: "[Freddie] had these big blonde curls & ... these sort of aquamarine eyes ...". I can just picture my old English teacher shuddering! If we must have descriptions of what people look like, then it is: "Freddie had big blonde curls & aquamarine eyes".
The characters have no depth & one cannot believe in them as people. An adulterous husband so lost to proper feeling that he breaks the news of his infidelity to his wife on her mobile phone when she is driving down the motorway? Highly unlikely, however villainous the erring spouse. Two members of the Tenko Club who drop everything, whether it be a high-powered job or a family of smalll children, to accompany their friend to America when she suffers a bereavement? Not on this planet!
I enjoyed one single sentence two-thirds of the way through: "[Reagan] envied Freddie the glamorous story. How much cooler to say that your mother had deserted you as a tiny child than that your mother wore print polyester & meant nothing to you."
I was very glad to finish this book so that I could embark on something worth reading.

Waffle without the syrup! - By: , 29 Mar 2006
The Tenko Club is the second of Elizabeth Noble's books I've read, the first being The Book Club. Elizabeth Noble has a very good understanding of friendship with alll it's complexities but she doesn't get over sentimental or give ridiculous names to her characters! Books that are hard to put down or ones that you can't wait to get back to are hard to find & The Tenko Club is cetainly one of those!
Either you love it or you hate it.... - By: T. Ljubic-Brown, 01 Aug 2005
Well, also judging from alll the other reviews here, this is a book that you either love or hate. And I happen to love it. It's essentiallly a story about friendship that stands the test of time, something increasingly rare nowadays. The group of women depicted meet in university where they form the Tenko Club, vowing to be there for each other whatever happens in the future. And they are. It's a wonderful book, leaving you with a warm glowing feeling inside, & also making you think about not neglecting your own special friendships with people, no matter how busy everyday life may be. And by the way, the descriptions of New England are indeed beautiful - & very accurate I may say, having lived there myself for a while!
