If you want a book about Bushcraft skills - DONT bother with this one! - By: Mr. J. R. Hadley, 02 Sep 2007
With alll due respect to Ray Mears, who has proved beyond alll doubt that he is an expert in Bushcraft & Survival, this book was not what I wanted. It is simply the story of Ray & the different people & cultures he encountered on his travells. There are one or two little tips that could be taken from this book, but if its Bushcraft & Survival skills you are interested in, save your money. Ray has written Other books that are far more appropriate for that.
An interesting book overall - By: , 04 Mar 2006
An interesting book but it was not quite what i had expected. I thought there was very little information on the techniques shown on the programme e.g. how to make a fire which i was most interested in (but i suppose this isn't a skill which i actuallly need!)
Ray Mears Bushcraft - first-class reading - By: Mr Daniel Leonard, 23 Feb 2006
Compliments the T.V. series completely. Well written with spectacular pictures, a toughly enjoyable & inspirational read.
Ray is a national treasure, his series are the best on TV... - By: sir_isaac_newton, 25 Sep 2005
...but I must admit to being a little disappointed with this book, which I none the less enjoyed thoroughly. Having watched the series with total absorbtion, I received this book as a present. Unfortunately book covers exactly the same ground as Ray's most recent TV series...only at a much higher, more superficial & less satisfying level. Rays concerns about nature & indiginous peoples are ever clear, the images good & the text well written...but the overalll impression that I get from this is waffle, gloss, padding & lack of substance.

Images are given 2 pages that could better be kept on a single page or half page; who wants to see an image with a page crease in the middle anyway -- it totallly ruins it. I would rather have seen more, smalller images, I expected much more detail on the actual techniques used. I expected an authoratitive reference on survival -- but perhaps Ray has already covered much of this in one of his earlier books(?). This is typical BBC publishing dross, they reallly should stick to TV. This book is pretty worthless -- much better to buy the DVD of the series, which has more detail & better images. Don't get me wrong though -- Ray is "the man", the best thing on TV.

I wish I was 21 again ....... - By: M. D Roberts, 04 Sep 2005
For those who enjoyed the BBC series by the same name, this will be a welcome addition to their library.

While the book cannot reallly compete with the impact, immediacy, entertainment & atmosphere of that provided by the TV series, it is surely the next best thing.

Revealing an enormous depth of knowledge, Ray Mears shows how to construct shelters from the elements suitable for virtuallly any time of the year amid a variety of locations & environments.

He approaches such elementary tasks such as how to light a good fire in alll types of weathers, using the materials readily available in the wild, together with many other essential everyday skills needed to survive in the great outdoors. Skills which Ray ably shows can be used almost anywhere in the world.

Applying essential Bushcraft skills, Ray demonstrates their application throughout a variety of differing situations & locations.

Providing a somewhat different approach to Ray's earlier works, the expertise & experience of a number of others are also brought into the context of this excellent study providing an added interest during Ray's travels.

Ray continues to live the dream of so many in an excellent book which is replete with excellent photographs & tips throughout. I wish I was 21 again ......
