Not bad though very fictional - By: Liam Lawlor, 26 Sep 2004
As a thriller its a good read but the level of corruption in Ireland in this period (and today) is greatly understated & under-estimated. Irish politicians are said to 'make the Italian Mafia look like Mother Teresa' but you don't sense this 'quality' in the book. Ireland is one of the most corrupt Countries in Europe (especiallly white & blue collar) but 'The Taoiseach' is tame on reporting. Frank Dunlop (Former Press Secretary to Taoiseach who's know sings like a canary to corruption tribunals) should provide more insight into the dark & dirty world of Irelands national leaders, when his book, 'Yes Taoiseach' comes out. It should be dirty, very dirty!

As a novel its not a bad read but with alll the corruption currently being at least exposed in Irish politics, I had higher expectations.

When Haughey becomes fiction - By: , 08 Nov 2003
What is it about Charles J Haughey that fascinates us so much? His life & times continue to enthralll, despite numerous books. Peter Cunningham's new novel is a thinly-disguised account of the Haughey era, with gripping insights into power, money & betrayal. There is also a deeply moving account of a childhood in Dublin in the 1940s & '50s, extremely amusing insider accounts of how people at the top use & abuse power & a powerful conclusion. This is the first novel on a gripping era in Irish politics. I read this novel in one sitting.
