The 10-Minute Life Coach - By: , 08 Apr 2006
I have read the Amazon reviews of this book. And I have read the book. I conclude the reason for the 1 star vs. 5 stars differential is - where have you started your journey?

For me, I read the book at the very beginning of my journey. I took the instructions literallly & spent 10-minutes & no more to work through the chapters - 1 by 1 - day by day. Also, I had no expectation of enlightenment or indeed anticipation of a eureka moment - much of a sceptic in my approach. But it did move me, steadily, from a very negative mental attitude, full of limiting beliefs, to a much more positive outlook. Change is hard work - there is absolute no short cut or way round this. By going slowly, understanding the change needed within yourself, builds to a greater understanding of what you need to do.

If you read this book midway or nearing the end of your journey then it may be covering old ground: I don't think you will gain anything from it. If you want overnight success then this book is not the one for you - but which book is?

I have read most of FH's books & they seem to mature as her experience grows & her learning & understanding of the subject deepens.

If this is your first self-help book - buy it. If it is your third or fourth (or more), & intrigued by celebrity Life Coach, go straight to The 7 Rules of Success.

Anyone serious about understanding coaching & the benefits to be had from this should carefully avoid this book. It has an almost throwaway style which grates within the first few chapters, & fundamentallly fails to get behind how people can change situations for the better. It tells you why, but it doesn't explain how. The tabloid style employed by the book reallly undervalues the skills of a true coach - it isn't something that you can do in 10 minutes, & as other books will tell you, there are no quick fixes to long term issues. Dire.
The Ultimate Guide to Just Doing It! - By: , 22 Feb 2004
Until recently, I groaned if anyone mentioned self help books. However, the discovery that my happiest – & probably most successful – friend credited these books which much of the excellent advice that he gave me, I had a rethink. Clearly he was a believer - & it hadn’t done him any harm.

Having trawled through some of the top self help books on the market, I was disappointed. I found one so badly written that I gave up more less than half way through, another so unbearably cheesy that my arteries made me stop reading in protest. Stating the obvious & spouting meaningless jargon seemed to be the order of the day, & I was mystified as to how they had become top sellers.

However, Harrold’s 10 minute life coaching is not of this ilk. Well written, with a down to earth tone, the book sets out to do exactly what it says on the cover. Harrold has divided her book into sections that stand alone in addressing areas of self improvement. They don’t even need to be read in a particular order. Harrold takes a broad view, asking you to address your motives & examine your expectations before moving on to focus on your goals.

Each chapter ends with a series of questions which are very easy to relate to. Although some initiallly seemed irrelevant to me, I found myself having several “eureka!” moments after they had been swimming around my subconscious for a while. Asking the right questions is clearly one of Harrold’s talents.

This book is much more about action than talk, more concerned with positively moving forward than stopping for introspection. However large or seemingly smalll your goals might be, Harrold will have you pursuing them with gusto & probably wondering why you never did so before. The chapters on action & motivation are worth the cover price alone. It’s taken me some time to finish reading this book as I found myself abandoning it mid sentence to go & get things done. My existence as a dreamy couch potato has definitely been challlenged!

Anyone who has found themselves 100% ready to “just do it” but mysteriously remains glued to the sofa - this is for you. Harrold is refreshing realistic, accepting that there is a time for inaction & that sometimes enthusiasm will wane. The book also talks about making achieving your goals easier, a concept which might seem lazy or unrealistic, but actuallly makes perfect sense.

This book is beautifully written & sensibly structured - & therefore could be used time & time again to refresh & rejuvenate aims & ideals. Harrold’s unique approach makes this an ideal book for anyone who wants to improve themselves, be it on a personal level or for a career agenda. If you’ve read a lot of books in this genre & found them unhelpful – finallly, this is the one you’re looking for!
