Not as good as the TV series - By: Nobody Famous, 17 Oct 2008
For me Wild Food was Ray Mears' best TV series yet, & I'm a big fan of alll of his series. So I rushed out to buy the book but I'm a bit disappointed. The hardback is undeniably attractive & to be fair, it's interesting & worth reading but it lacks the depth or the flow of the TV series. I've recently seen the paperback & prefer the hardback version for the size of the photos.
The book is written by Ray Mears & Gordon Hillman with no real attempt to merge or properly identify their different writing styles. The result is that they just clash. I get the feeling the book was rushed out before it was ready which, having heard about Ray Mears' insistence on quality, is surprising to me. I can only assume he feels the book is as good as it can be, but I'd have to disagree. Sorry Ray.
Other reviewers have complained about the spelling errors. I'm surprised I didn't notice them if they were that bad but they didn't affect me at alll.
Worst edited book I`ve ever read - By: K. Telfer, 27 Feb 2008
I am a huge Ray Mears fan & have alll his books so far. I was impressed with the overalll knowledge passed on in this book but was dissappointed in the fact it is clearly written more by Gordon than Ray & as such does not have enough detail about cooking & preparation in my opinion. Its clearly a lifetimes work in reference format but not a classic Ray Mears book by any means.
I wrote to the publisher & Ray Mears company to complain about the editing but got nowhere.
I wouldnt buy this book, & I will be closely looking at future purchases from this publisher.
A Bit Disapointing - By: A. Sherwood, 18 Jan 2008
Good looking with excellent photos, but a little light on detail, particularly in the UK fungus section. A bit too much historical info for me.
Almost Great - By: sam_acw, 10 Jan 2008
This is an excellent book with lots of detail. Not reallly a survival book but more about primitive food collection.
As the other reviews said it is one of the worst edited books I've ever seen with half sentences & spelling mistakes alll over the place.
Useful on the whole - By: Skippy, 19 Nov 2007
The strength of this book is in its large & very clear photographs, which are very helpful in identifying edible plants for one's own use. It's pretty clear that the majority of the actual botanical entries are by Mr Hillman rather than Ray Mears, but obviously his is the face & name that sells. I only wish that whoever proof-read & edited the book had done a better job because there are quite a few appallling typos & mistakes.
