If this book can work for me... - By: , 15 Jul 2003
I was given this book about five years ago by a kindly family member who had heard Julie Morgenstern interviewed. It is an extremely easy book to read, & the author manages to tap into the reader's sense of helplessness without being patronising.
But...five years on, having applied some of the lessons in the book to some of the rooms in my old house, I now find myself in a new house, becoming increasingly overwhelmed by clutter & guess what - I can't find the book! I might now end up buying a new copy just to be able to find the old one!
Moral of the tale : if your hobby is reading self-help books, get this one! If you reallly intend to re-organise your life, finish the job before you start reading the next book!
Simple and obvious, but very effective. - By: , 13 Jan 2003
My wife scoffed at this book when I first bought it. However, before the day was out, she'd read two thirds of it, had drawn up the relevant lists Julie Morgenstern requires you to do & was badgering me to do the same.
Julie helps you tackle the tasks of organising right from the start; she helps you identify what you want to achieve, helps you plan your tasks before wading in, and, importantly, shows you how to keep yourself motivated to finish it. It's alll rather obvious stuff, though, but sometimes it takes someone else to point the obvious out.
If you're not a fan of Dawna Walter in the BBC series "The Life Laundry", be assured that Julie Morgenstern doesn't encourage you to simply throw everything out into an industrial crusher. She does say it's OK to keep things & shows you how to identify what you want to keep & find homes for it.
Does it work? Our flat is now less cluttered, everything has its own home & it keeping it that way takes just moments. A very readable & effective book, but it's not a quick fix - you will need to put a bit of time & effort in! Highly recommended.
Life-saving - By: , 28 Oct 2001
If you watch your days passing by leaving you with heaps of things you're not sure you need, but well, you might, you know... if you spend huge portions of those days searching for the remains of other days.. when you're lost, confused, drowning in paper & things - well, it's time to buy Julie Morgenstern's book. It is so simple, reallly, you think 'Why didn't I think of this before?'. The fact is, I didn't. I got the book, did the course, & managed to control my 'disorganization', as well as my partner's chronic one. We opened alll those embarassing, demotivating 15-year old boxes & ended up throwing most of those stored essentials away. What a rush! Free at last to ride into the sunset! Wish you alll the same, too.
SPACE - By: , 13 Sep 2001
The first two chapters tell you about the methods she uses & how to use them. The book shows you that organizing is as easy as SPACE (Sort, Purge, Assign, Containerise, Equalize). She helps you find out why it's messy in your home or office & how to change it. The rest of the book is is dealing with different parts of the house. She also shares the stories of some of her customers, which makes you feel better because they were messier & managed to get organized. This book shows you that you can get organized no matter how messy you are when starting out.
an easy to follow book that inspires you to organise! - By: , 20 Aug 2001
I'm fairly dubious of self help books, but was desparate to do something about my lack of organisation. This was my second attempt at getting the right book for me & it was the best thing I've done. This book inspired me to look at my stuff in a different light & the 'kindergarten model' was exactly what I needed to make my little world easier to get around!
