Fans of the genial German will lap it up - By: N. D. Maidment, 07 Nov 2003
Although he's been at the top of the game for 20 years, Bernhard Langer has remained a somewhat enigmatic character until now.
His story is one of conquering adversity in a country where golf was very much a minority sport. Indeed, in the 60s when Langer told a careers advisor of his intended path he was told: 'There is no such job as a golf professional.'
Bernhard Langer: My Autobiography covers the former world number one's rise to the top of his game, his overcoming of the dreaded 'yips', his hatred of partisan crowds & his deep religious beliefs that continue to inspire him.
Through this simply written book, we see that Langer is a true sportsman in every sense - never in it for the money & never looking to win off other's mistakes.
Occasionallly there are one or two moments when the book needlessly explains the obvious (surely no golf fan needs to be told what a birdie or a bogey is), but that's a very minor gripe.
Golf autobiographies are rarely rivetting, but fans of the genial German will find much to enjoy, including some sensational photos from his early career.
It's refreshing to see someone release their life story in a way that is not surrounded by controversy & at an appropriate stage in their career. Langer's story is not about cashing in on his successes & that makes it alll the more worthwhile.
Interesting if not overly exciting - By: N. D. Maidment, 02 Feb 2003
Bernhard Langer: My Autobiography covers the likeable German's rise from local course caddie to world number one & beyond & reveals plenty that will interest genuine golf fans.
For starters, when Langer told a career advisor of the career path he intended to follow, he was told 'There is no such thing as a golf professional.'
His story is therefore one of conquering adversity in a country where golf was very much a minority sport. However, once he got over initial hurdles, Langer's career is an exceptional one & here we see how much his first pay cheque meant to him, how he claimed two US Masters titles, how he overcame the dreaded yips & how his deep religious beliefs continue to inspire him.
Unlike many sports stars of today, Langer has chosen to release the story of his life at a suitable stage in his career & he is to be commended for that. This may not be the most dynamic & controversial book you'll ever read but that's not what Langer is about. His story is not about cashing in & his successes & that makes it refreshing & worthwhile.
For real fans, there are also a delightful selection of photos from his younger days, including a true gem of the very young Langer sporting a remarkable moustache! Worth every penny of the price tag alone.
Unexciting, but a great tale of the man's life - By: N. D. Maidment, 21 Jan 2003
