Brilliant and perceptive crime novel set in the 1950s - By: A. J. R. Taylor, 10 Jan 2002
3rd in Taylor's Lydmouth series of crime novels which build up a picture of a provincial society on the borders of England & Wales in the early 1950s - & also tell the story of a love affair. Wonderfully realised historical setting & profoundly satisfying characterisation AND a good crime story. For those who like their crime stories to be good novels as well.
A good plot but a bit long winded and boring at points - By: , 16 Jul 2000
This was a book that took a lot of getting into but once I started I had to read to the end just to find out what had happened. It was very good with the a unique plot & the usual twists that keeps the reader in suspense.
Other people might like it. - By: , 30 Mar 1999
I quite liked Andrew Taylor's first two Lydmouth mysteries (An Air That Kills/The Mortal sickness). This third book will probably still appeal to those that like involved plots & don't mind being left with a muddle of messed up lives at the end. It also continues the relationship between hero policeman & heroine journalist started in the first book (though with more involvement of the hero's family this time)-which to me is becoming increasingly tiresome. I don't know how many more books the author intends to stretch this over but I don't think I will be bothering to find out.
