A refreshing look at Africa less that 30 years ago - By: , 07 Nov 2002
The Hampton Family achieved a feat that was both daring & exciting for the reader, but without the nausea of the a Walt Disney style.

It highlighted very clearly the sterio-type views older adults have on theose around them. All 3 children displayed a refreshing, honest & sincere response to the "native" population as we calll them. They callled them children, kids, friends.

Perhaps one view was towards the end of the book when the Doctor took them across the border to visit the hospital & when asked how many people lived in the town he said 150. Francis queries this & Charles his Dad interupted & said that means white people, the local people don't count.

It bring to mind my own experiences as a child when travelling around Colombia. Staying in fincas (farms) in the outback south of the Guajiro peninsula where we lived in "houses" with no wallls just thatched roofs. Wore only shorts & local slip on sandals for thorny ground & eat food that most people would find disgusting today. (Termites, iguana eggs, fried crickets, giant Andean worms etc)

Enjoy the book. At times sentimental, gripping, with drama, accidents, & a view of the local area before recent tragedies in the area.
