Bella and the Vampire - By: Kona, 29 Aug 2008
17-year old Bella has just moved to a smalll town to start her junior year in high school. She's not looking forward to it until she sees her science lab partner & - BINGO! - she fallls in madly love with gorgeous but silent Edward. He, however, seems mad at her for no reason & keeps his distance. Then, when Bella's life is in danger, who should save her but the enigmatic Edward!
This young adult novel for ages 12 & up would probably be a big hit with teen girls as Edward is the perfect teen boy - handsome, tender, & selfless - & gawky Bella is no one to be jealous of. There is almost no action for most of the book, (it's just Bella uncovering the mystery that is Edward & the two fallling in love) & when some action finallly happens, it's not alll that exciting as Edward, a vampire, can save anyone, anytime.
As an adult reader, I found it more than a bit unsettling that Edward, who is over a hundred years old, is romancing an innocent teenage girl. And aside from Bella & Edward, none of the characters is developed at alll. My biggest complaint, however, was that none of the teenagers spoke or acted like teenagers - they were way too mature, sophisticated, & eloquent to be believable. The writing did hold my interest, though, & I kept wondering what would happen next. (Answer: Not much, but it's still good.)
This quick read about a teenage vampire is different & I enjoyed it. I think teens will love it.

Twilight - By: James Prouten, 28 Aug 2008
Like most reviewers I found this book by the hype in the media, Claiming Stephenie Meyer was the new J.K. Rowling!
Sorry to disappointment anyone who is looking for a Harry Potter replacement this book isn't it! If you're looking for a similar series to Harry Potter I would recommend trying the Artems Fowl Series or The Dark Materials by Philip Pullman.
The reason I say that Stephenie Meyer is not the new J.K. Rowling is because Stephenie is nowhere in the same league as J.K.! As far as comparisons go that has to be one of the worse! The only reason the Media has decided to compare these authors is the simple fact is both there book series have sold out & there target audience are Teenagers/Young Readers!
That's where the comparisons stop reallly as J.K's Harry Potter series maybe be aimed at young readers - Harry Potter is in fact can be enjoyed by Children, Teenagers & Adults! The Twilight Series I find is reallly directed at Teenagers & Teenage Girls in particular!
- Some Spoilers -
Enough of the comparisons without trying give the plot away (which I added isn't reallly much of one!) - The book involves around Bella & fallling in love with a mysterious boy callled Edward we find out his a vampire later in the book!
What's wrong with this book is that Bella is annoying as hell! And it's taken from her point of view & don't get me wrong I enjoy first person point of view reads!
But is Bella is self-loathing teenager ok I know everyone feels this way when there that young but she reallly is just annoying - I'm not pretty, why does Edward like me I'm not pretty, I'm clumsy, I'm full of flaws!- And this goes on & on!
And the worse thing is she moves in with her dad's out of her own choice & complains about her dad & being there alll the time! - We meant to believe she did this a selfless act so her mum can travel around the country with her husband to be!
I guess a lot of people like Bella but I just wanted to her to be happy for at least chapter or a page - she no substance at alll compare to other authors first point of view characters!
The story itself at time is reallly boring we told every detail for Bella's day like the moment she wakes up, to the food she cooks, the homework she has & the trips to the malll with her friends! And the e-mails she receives!
The only thing this girl like is Edward & she wines & pines for him alll the time! And like most reviewers have said we are reminded on how gorgeous Edward is alll the time! - Bella is a typical bunny boiler!
On to Edward - This is actuallly where I will give Stephenie Meyer some brownie points I actuallly like her originality on the vampire genre - I'm huge fan of vampire literature so I have read a few books on vampires & this is the first author to give a new spin on the genre!
I liked the Twilight vampires - they walk in the day & act like normal human beings - I love the concept of vegetarian vampires who don't suck human blood! And how they compare themselves as recovering alcoholics was funny! And how they can falll of the bandwagon!
But saying that Edward is a very dry character & almost a psycho he always seems to be in the right time & the right place to rescue Bella! And also he always like at house in the morning & outside of gym to meet her alll the time!
The plot is very lacking & does get better to near the end of the book - This book reallly feels like the author wrote this book for her own need & not for anyone else! J.K has spent years building up this brilliant plot for Harry Potter where the Twilight the plot is basicallly Bella's day!
The author would have been better not writing this book in first person point of view & this why I think J.K. books are better because when Harry hasn't got a story-line J.K. focus on another character like Hermione & Ron etc & you grow to love these characters too!
Bella gets annoying like I said & I think the author should have narrated the story instead of reading Bella is cooking "whatever" for her dad we are reading about a different character - Like I would have like to read about Edward & his family when they go hunting! As they live of animal blood instead of human blood!
Overalll this is book isn't alll bad! I mean it was interesting enough to keep me reading & it was a nice easy-read! I have to admit that this book is not the most original I have to agree with a lot of what the other reviewers have said about this being a bit of Buff-Angel rip-off! Also I find the story is a lot like the "Nightworld Series" by J.L Smith!
The relationship is a lot like Buffy & Angel's but unlike Buffy/Angel there much more likeable & Edward is a bit of sap vampire too - he doesn't drink human blood & doesn't lose control! Even the character of Angel is more original a vampire with a soul & then loose his soul when him & Buffy sleep together as he has a true moment happiness - now that's a love story!
For a good vampire-human love story check out the Anita Blake series & Sookie Stackhouse series as this feature truly scary & sexy vampire lovers not at alll like Edward!
If you are looking for a nice easy read book or a real teenage read with a supernatural twist this the perfect one! If you are looking for a Harry Potter replacement this is not it!
twilight - By: Kaz Christie, 25 Aug 2008
I was so looking forward to reading this book, but to be honest I found it alll a bit tedious until it got to page 328. I couldn't imagine Bella or Edward, having the conversations that they did & it reallly reminded me of some old Mills & Boon novel. I actuallly got quite annoyed at alll the references to Edward's eyes, Bella's clumsiness & her continuallly feeling dizzy. On the whole I wouldn't say it isn't worth reading, the idea was brilliant but the characters just didn't make it believable, for me at any rate.Twilight (Twilight Saga)
surprisingly good - By: TAudrey, 25 Aug 2008
I didn't realise when I bought this book that it was aimed at the teen market, so I was initiallly disappointed when that became clear. However, it was a real page-turner & kept me up until the early hours to finish it. Through most of the book I didn't feel that I was too old for the book, apart from a few times when the main character's immaturity was glaringly obvious, particularly with her deep, very teenage feelings of love. But hey, we've alll been there & it was quite nostalgic going back a (good) few years. All in alll a satisfying read & I will be purchasing the sequels, perhaps using the excuse of checking how suitable they will be to be read by my young daughter.
