Could not hold my attention. - By: Huntress Reviews, 04 Mar 2003
Despite it being hate at first sight for Elspeth Clayton & Gervaise Valerian, the two find that they are forced into working together. You see, Valerian has a friend he needs to smuggle into France, while Elspeth must rescue her beloved brother, a soldier of fortune who has run afoul of French authorities & is slated for execution. Valerian has concocted a plan to get his friend out of England, but needs a young woman to masquerade as a nurse to pull it off successfully. Elspeth needs a man to help her get her brother's freedom. The young cleric who is helping both of them sees the two as the answer to one another's problems, & they have to agree. Time is running out for both of their causes.

Over the course of their perilous journey, their loathing begins to turn to admiration, & they begin to reluctantly see each other through different eyes. Yet what will the spunky miss & the dandified rouge do when their adventure is at it's end?

*** I found it hard to believe that these two opposites managed to attract. Valerian never did seem to have much depth; however, Elspeth did appear to be a Regency version of Scarlett O'hara. It just did not capture my attention & I found it difficult to concentrate on the storyline. ***
