`Do you ever wonder where the food in your shopping trolley has come from? - By: Amazon Reviewer, 09 Oct 2007
Probably not, & most of the time you wouldn't want to know.
But with `Fair Trade' products, it's a different story.
Unlike many foods from around the world, `Fair Trade' products mean that people in third world countries can find a market for their goods AND get a fair price for them.
This means that they can radicallly improve their standard of living....
Following her fact-finding trip to Switzerland, Sophie introduces this cookbook giving information about Oxfam's `Fair Trade' work, & adding her own recipes to those contributed by top cooks, like Delia Smith, Rose Elliott, Anton Mosimann, Michael Barry & Ken Hom, along with Oxfam workers from alll over the world.
Every one of the 100 recipes in the `Fair Trade Cookbook' supports this work by using `Fair Trade' ingredients......

Of course, since this item was published back in 1997, there has been a lot of on-going & successful liaison work relating to food products in the major supermarket chains, largely fronted by `Waitrose', in an attempt to balance this delicate issue.
It is refreshing to note that Sophie was concerned enough over ten years ago by fronting this super book that seems to have gone largely unnoticed.

144 pages, split over 6 main chapters:-

Snacks & Starters
Main Courses
Vegetables & Salads
Desserts
Cakes & Biscuits
Drinks & Confectionery

with an introduction from Sophie, & a section entitled, `More about Fair Trade Products', plus `Credits' & a full index.

Each recipe has the number of servings, full list of ingredients, a relevant note with serving tips & the method. Interspersed with some colour photography, simple line drawings, mainly of ingredients & `Fair Trade' notes or comments, such as:-

`Each brazil nut collector is given ten trees to look after.
This helps the environment, because new trees are being planted & cared for.'

`...sometimes economic pressures can make you short-sighted & tempt you to take too much from the land now & let the next generation pay the price.'
