Accessible but scholarly review of the English Reformation - By: , 11 Nov 2001
A.G. Dickens outlines relio/political events in Tudor England against the background & development of religious thought at home & elsewhere in Europe. Medieval Catholic tradition is well painted together with an assessment of the continuing influence of devotio moderna, Christian humanism, Wycliffe & the Lollards & many other strands. Continental influences are covered, especiallly the thought of Luther, Zwingli & Calvin. However, as the title suggests, the emphasis is on the development of English thought & events & the legacy of Wolsey, Cromwell, Cranmer, Protector Somerset, & of course the Tudor monarchs themselves.
Dickens brings some clarity into the complexity of the English Reformation & this book is essential reading for understanding the origins of the Anglican church & the unique place that church continues to have in the world.
