Good notes for understanding the Bible - By: PhilosopherKing, 29 Nov 2008
I actuallly prefer the language of the RSV Catholic Edition published by Ignatius Press although this edition is good for looking up information. It contains a study guide, maps & detailed footnotes.
The Jerusalem Bible - Invaluable - By: MICHAEL O'SHEA, 04 Nov 2008
I have a copy of the Jerusalem Bible that I bought in 1969. No other version comes near, in terms of clarity of language. There is a feel of reality about it - that I am reading & understanding the words of the various authors in a way that reflects the actual words used in the various original Hebrew & Aramaic languages. I don't know these languages, so I cannot be certain, but there is a scholarly feel about the whole thing, & the various footnotes & introductions answer many queries that I have had. It's a marvellous achievement, & although I appreciate that some people will find the pocket-size version useful I would hate to be without the footnote references. A great collection of writings, vividly evoking attitudes, people & places, especiallly the person of Jesus. Invaluable to me for almost forty years.
excellent version of the bible - By: jesus' girl, 07 Jul 2008
i bought one of each version of the bible that i thought i could understand & learn from - NIV, Good news, NRSV (cited as best by our bishop) & the jerusalem bible & NRSV are by far the best in my opinion. This version is excellent & contains a few books you won't find in other bibles - Tobit, Judith, Maccabees 1 & 2, book of wisdom.
An excellent bible i would truly recommend.
Pshaw...! - By: Fmg Sarah, 11 Oct 2007
Well, well, well, i was greatly deceived by the price & the format-the colour is horrible(being probably manufactured by child labour in some remote part of China). The tetragammaton is used throughout. I wouldn't advise any sensible person to buy this volume-try the leatherbound one. There might be something there. For the translation itself is a great piece of scholarship. But don't let yourself be deceived by the price. Utter tosh. The text itself is badly set & well, i could continue along this line for long. Stick to the leatherbound version or to more traditional translations, like Authorised & Revised Versions & the Douay-Rheims Bible. It's not even worth the one star.
Excellent Translation!!!!! - By: , 12 Jan 2004
The only real objection I have to this edition is the paper quality & smalll print (but then again, you can't expect anything else from a pocket edition). The various headings make navigation a breeze, but slow your reading down a bit.
Other than that though, this is a great little Bible to own. The translation of the Hebrew is especiallly good, with the Divine Name being used. The Septuagint has been used as little as possible. Italics are used where it has.
This Bible uses the Catholic canon, which means the Deuterocanonical/Apocryphal books are included in the Old Testament.
The notes, although not as extensive in the pocket edition, are very useful. They talk about the nature of the books, their content, their authors, etc.
If you are looking for a new Bible, I would definately reckommend the NJB, although I'd probably buy the Standard edition, not the pocket version, as it is easier to read.
