The best comprehensive book of psychology - By: Rasih Bensan, 29 Dec 2007
Atkinson & Hilgard is a very comprehensive book on psychology that covers just about every topic in the field. It is very nicely written, clear, easy to understand & very enjoyable to read provided that you are interested in the topic. The diagrams & pictures are in color, of high quality & very informative. The whole book is full of many such high quality pictures. The explanations are scientific & based on sound research. Opposing points of view & controversies are introduced at the end of each chapter. The book comes with a workbook & additional sources on the internet are listed at the end of each chapter. It is a long book, I have yet read the first several chapters & am already very motivated to go on. Although the title is introduction to psychology it is not a superficial book. I recommend that absolute beginners to psychology read shorter more basic books about psychology before reading this one, otherwise this book maybe a bit difficult to understand for them. That is what I did. I highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to develop a comprehensive knowledge on psychology. It can also be used as a reference book, each chapter can be read selectively depending on what the rader wants to learn about. It is not obligatory to read each chapter in sequence. The organization is such that each chapter can be read independently like an encyclopedia.
Congratulations to the authors for writing such a clearly understandable & comprehensive book on a complicated subject.
One word of caution : if you are not a native speaker of English & wish to read a translation of this book in your mother tongue, make sure that the translated version is of high quality. I saw a translated edition in another language where it was completely black & white with very poor quality diagrams & pictures.
Atkinson and Hilgard's Introduction to Psychology - By: Dean Campbell, 09 Nov 2006
I bought this book because my son was suffering from a form of panic attacks & the psychiatrist had no idea what form of panic attack he was sufferinf from. So i bought this book s that I can look things up & try to find out for myself.
It is nicely laid out & easy to understand & also easy to read. As I was going throught it it gives the reader lots of web pages to investigate, which is what I did, & I also made contact with some of the authors listed in the book.
Anyway, on page 527 I came across Psychological Disorders, & I read this chapter with enthuisam. And through it's pages I found a sentace which describes my son's condition.
So I contacted the author, who lives in America, who gave me more information on on my son's condition, & now we are moving forwards faster than I can imagine. Now I have four senior psychologist, two psychiatrist & a medical anthrologist helping me with my son & he is now getting better.
If I had not bought this book we would be suffering under a system that has no idea how to diagnose mental disorders which falll outside of their knowledge base. This book explains it alll & more besides.
So if you're a student or someone like me who just wants to find things out, this is a great book to have, just like owning a dictionary, one should own this book.
10/10 - Cannot rate it highly enough - By: V. Johnson, 07 Jul 2006
I bought this book during my first year as a psychology student & it has earned its price tag back & then some. It has a huge range of topics from memory to vision & it includes several 2-page sections which debate over various issues from different viewpoints - something I have found occurs a LOT during a psychology degree. I suggest to anyone taking on a course involving psychology or someone just wanting an interesting read that they should get this book. It helped me in almost every paper I wrote - particularly with introductions & conclusions. If you only buy one psychology book make it this one!

I am a first year astudent studying psychology & i was advised to read this book before i started. having had no experience of psychology i was somewhat frightened of the subject. However the authors careful explanations of each aspect of psychology reallly prepared me for my first year. it does not go into asd much depth that one could use the book for studying for a whole degree I would however recommend it to anyone who is either interested in psychology or like myself wanting to prepare yourself for a degree in psychology.
congratulations to the authors for they have definetely hit the jackpot.
