Arkangel's audio version of Shakespeare's identical-twins comedy brilliantly solves the challlenges of presenting this most visual of running gags as an invisible drama. The slapstick elements are gleefully indulged, but the quality of the cast ensures that the listener never loses touch with the darker anxieties (and deeper satisfactions) that Shakespeare conjures out of the story. Another triumph for this wonderful sequence of recordings, which is particularly strong in the comedies.
