Magical - By: Mrs. K. A. Wheatley, 14 Jun 2008
I loved this story as a child. Even then it was dated, but classic stories like this easily weather that. Barney's growing relationship with the caveboy Stig is so magical that you become totallly immersed in their world. I am looking forward to reading this to my own children. It has alll the ingredients of a classic adventure story, a lonely boy finds a special friend who is unique & magical & together they create a world of their own.
A true childhood classic - By: mr inferno, 28 Mar 2008
I read this when I was 7 years old, way back in 1973. It is true gem of a book, even though some of the stories elements have become a bit dated, such as Barney's sister riding in a hunt etc.. The overalll story is a bit like childhood version of 'Quatermass & the Pit'. with Barney our childhood narrator discovering the chalk quarry by fallling head long into it's depths - soon to discover a lost apeman, from an unknown tribe. I won't get drawn into giving too much of the story away, suffice to say that it is a beautiful book of friendship, discovery & childhood imagination run wild. In fact a timeless classic & one that should be remembered for many years to come. This audio is shear excellence & Tony Robinson brings a whole new depth to this superb story. Worth reading the terrific book by Clive King - YES! But Mr Robinson brings a class of his own to this magnificent story.
What is Stig? - By: Mehajabeen Farid, 13 Jan 2008
Barney stays with his grandmother & his sister, Lou, for the holidays. In the holidays Barney goes to the chalk pit where he first meets Stig on a very hot day! The problem is that nobody believes Stig is real until they see him. Lou, sees Stig one night when the two of them (Lou & Barney) go out & see a strange tribe of cave people. Barney spots Stig ad introduces him to Stig & the two of them become Honoured Guests at the celebration. Another time, Stig frightens her & she assumes that it is reallly Barney because they were going to a fancy dress party as, Lou a puma & him a cave man. Stig & Barney become heroes when they stop thieves from stealing from his grandmothers house & they recover the other treasures that the robbers took. Snargets are the roughest boys in town but when Stig takes the youngest Snarget, little Robin Hood, the other two turn as timid as kittens. They give Stig & Barney three gifts which they share. First they give some jelly babies & Stig likes them, second the give sherbets with liquorice straws which stig loves & last they give a packet of cigarettes which barney totallly despises! I liked the bit when Barney fell through the roof of Stig's home at the first meeting & even though the two of them didn't understand each other much they were great friends! I would rate this book about 9/ 10 & I think that 9 - 12 year old would like it a lot if they like adventurous stories.

A true family book - By: P. T. Wahlberg, 22 Oct 2007
Excellent book.
My husband used to have this book when he was a child.
Now we have bought it so that our children can enjoy it too.
For bigger children. My eldest daughter is 7.

An excellent, super book that deserves 5 stars and nothing less - By: nashwa, 14 Apr 2007
One of my favourite bits of this story is when Barney meets Stig by fallling in the dump. Stig is a sort of cave man, except that he uses much different tools than a real cave man would. And who would light a fire with a TV aerial & a broken chair leg?

I wished that it was longer, because I liked it so much.
