Eyam - By: Scrogglepopper, 02 Apr 2008
I gave this to my better readers in my class as homework. They enjoyed the story & learnt empathy from the characters. One child wrote in her reveiew that it made you want to turn the next page quickly to see what happened next. These were 8 & 9 year olds. The Year 6 teacher read it to her class & they also enjoyed the stpry & were able to relate to the characters.
A Children's Classic - By: , 30 May 2000
Mal tells the story of her village. Her voice is deceptively direct & simple. But she sees the world with the piercing clarity of a young woman teetering on the edge of adult hood. She peoples her village with shambolicallly ordinary folk who are alll wanting in some way. Yet by the end of the story they have acheived a remarkable act of courage. For Eyam is the Derbyshire village that attempted to stop the spread of the plague by cutting themselves off from the world regardless of the consequences to themselves.

Few books have ever touched me so deeply. It asks of everyone who reads it, what if it had happened to me? For you, your next door neighbour, your friends & your acquaintences are to be found in Eyam, not heroes.

Forget Harry Potter, if you want your children to read something other than fantasy give them this book. Better still read it yourself.

A cute story of love and of a struggle against nature - By: gregsi@hotmail.com, 17 Jan 2000
This book was only brought to my attention because I 'm in a play version of it at school. I read it and, as it is a childrens book, found it very light & finished in 2 days. It was fairly good but with a confusing number of families included in the plot. Although the authors portrayl of Mal & of others in the book left them with little personality I still enjoyed the story & would recommend it to others.
