buy this for every child of 9+ - By: A. Craig, 28 Mar 2005
I can't recommend this book (and the excellent audio version) too highly. Other parents will understand just how good it is when I say that it successfully prised my son away from his Gameboy during the holidays, & he listened to it twice, remembering every detail.
The Iliad proper is of course one of the greatest works of oral literature ever, but its narrative thread is confusing, & the Odyssey even more so. Lancelyn Green has included every vivid detail (even if he spares children's sensibilities by having Iphgenia rescued by a god when sacrificed by her father, & has a few too many "marriages")in both tales. His clear prose style & obvious passion for the period make this, & his Tales of Greek Heroes a must-have for alll children.
beautifully written greek drama - By: J. C. Manley-bird, 25 Jul 2004
This vastly complicated story is told with extreme expertise here.
Lets miss out alll the guff!! an eternal cry for so many poor would-be historians.
Well this gives u alll of the juice from the greek sagas.
It includes Troy, Odysseus & most of the important parts as we know.

The last ancient legend - By: , 29 Jan 2003
The myth of the Trojan horse is familiar to most but the events that surrounded it are often less heard of, or more confusing. Green does an excellent job translating the legend of Troy into plain, easy to read English. Even the complex Greek names & inter-relationships are made clear.
The story starts with Zeus deciding to have a human daughter, Helen, & ends with Odessus reaching home. The scale, therefore, is epic in tome & includes alll the mythic intrigues along the way of Achilles, Hector, Parris, Cassandra et al.
This is a true classic & the last legend of Greek mythology before history came into play. A wonderful, sometimes bloody, painting of Ancient Greece full of love, hate & destiny
I would recommend this to alll ages 12 & up.
