Each chapter of this book is a concise overview of one of the countries formerly hemmed in between the Soviet Union & the Iron Curtain (except the DDR). The details covered range from distant history to economic, cultural & military factors affecting that country at the time of writing (about 1990, within a year of the 1989 revolutions). The author's writing style (`sounding' very much like a discursive BBC journalist) is chatty & informative, his wry, balanced & perceptive commentary making this book very readable. And as for his sceptical & worried predictions of 1990 about the `end of history' ... they seem justified so far. Thoroughly recommended for general reading or a quick survey of c. 1989 Eastern Europe.
