review of Reily ace of spies - By: John Paul, 17 Feb 2006
I reallly enjoyed this book, not just because of the way it was told, but also because it is the book that was closest to the truth that I have read on the secret services & how some of the worlds security services were (and still are) but how our own security services are as well. I recomend this book for not just those who are intersted in the security services, but for those who enjoy history as well.
The first Bond, James Bond - By: drsh@cornix.com, 06 Mar 2001
Reilly Ace of spies is the true story of one of Britain's greatest, yet least known spies. Written by Robin Bruce Lockhart whose father was connected with Reilly during the Russian revolution, it tells a fascinating story of man who spent his adult life devoted too three things, personal wealth creation, women, & spying. Sidney Reilly was born the illegitimate son of a Jewish businessman; the British Secret Service recruited him in 1914 because of his skill with languages & his ability to blend in with his surroundings. He organised a counter-revolution to depose Lenin, which failed only because of a fumbled assassination attempt on Lenin only days before the revolution was to take place. This is a fascinating book on a character that should be better known. A television series was made in the 80s based on the book & starred Sam Neill as Reilly. Ian Flemming is said to have loosely based James Bond on Reilly, & Mata Hara's Biographer is quoted as saying "she was a great spy, but not in Reilly's league".
