Not a masterpiece of detection, but a lot of fun - By: Pretty Polly, 24 Sep 2001
'No, no, Hyland - it won't do,' says Appleby to a police colleague. 'I've had my fill of murdered baronets - & especiallly at midnight. The annals of the Yard are glutted with them. It was hard at times to believe that any could be left alive in England.' Yet this turns out to be another case of that particular sort, & it's nothing if not bizarre. Later on Hyland gives a despairing synopsis of it: 'The whole thing is a nightmare. Three identical brothers creeping round the place with each other's dead bodies!' After an intriguing start where many things happen of which the true meaning is not immediately obvious, there are enough twists & turns in this story to spin anyone's head, & even after finishing this, you'll probably need to make an effort to remember who exactly murdered whom - or even who remains alive at the end. The story does not have a precise plot mechanism like, for instance, the best Christie books have, but there's a fair measure of Innes's trademark polished zaniness. Also, there are a few rather surprising traits of character that Appleby exhibits here - or seemed that way to me. All in alll, not the best introduction to Innes's work, but excellent stuff for the fans.
