A Classic - By: Mrs. K. A. Wheatley, 24 May 2008
I read this book as a child, & now I am reading it to my children. The simple pictures & vivid colour scheme reallly seems to grab them & they love Harry's naughty, dirty, ways. It is one of those books that reallly has stood the test of time. There is a lot of sympathy for his burial of the scrubbing brush & refusal to have a bath in our house, so it reallly strikes a chord!

What can I add to the fact that this book is an alll-time classic? Fabulous illustrations by Margaret Bloy Graham. You should seek out 'Harry & the Lady Next Door', which wasn't printed for the UK market.
Adorable - By: J. E. Davidson, 03 May 2005
I loved this book as a child & now my son, 4, loves it too. It tells the story of Harry, a little white dog with black spots who hates washing. To avoid a bath Harry hides the scrubbing brush & runs away for an adventure. In the process gets so dirty that he becomes a black dog with white spots & his family cannot recognise him, forcing him to have the bath he had been avoiding.
It is a lovely story, very well told & well illustrated; it is also a very good length for a bed time story. The book was first published in 1955 & my only reservation is that the illustrations do look a little dated (steam trains, coal trucks & the family look like a 1950's American stereotype). This is a very minor reservation & does reallly not detract from the book.
A great book that will excite children - pictures and text - By: , 31 Oct 2001
This is a book I had as a child - & 30 years on it now fascinates my own child! I was thrilled to find it still in print.
Harry is a mischievous black & white dog with a number of titles that cover his antics - with great phrases that will stick with you for life 'a white dog with black spots or a black dog with white spots'. Great fun
My two-year old children are obsessed with this book. - By: , 07 Mar 2000
My two-year old twins are obsessed with this book. Every morning at 7 they wake my wife & I brandishing the book - chosen from a pile of about 15 others - demanding 'read it. read it. read it.' After 3 months reading, they now know most of it off by heart - 'Harry changed from being a white dog with black spots to a black dog with white spots,'...... 'It's Harry! It's Harry! It's Harry!' the children cried. Amazingly my wife & I aren't too sick of it & are now going to buy the other Harry books so we can vary the routine somewhat.
