Dr Abby Dolan moved to Patience, California, to work at the Regional Hospital because her fiancé Josh found work at Colstar International in the same town. Colstar is the largest producer of portable power sources & they specialise in producing several types of batteries. Truly enough, Patience owes its wealth to this large company. After about five weeks in Patience, Abby notices that Josh is becoming irritable, distracted, easily fatigued & more & more frequently suffers from violent headaches which make him reach for the bottle, something he never used to do before. Furthermore, several patients treated by Abby seem to suffer from the same symptoms as Josh. After having had their blood analysed by an independent laboratory, it appears that these patients were alll contaminated by cadmium. Colstar refuses to locate the source of the contamination because it would cost them too much to close the plant for any length of time. When Abby's investigations become too pressing, the director of Patience Regional Hospital, Joe Henderson, asks her to resign, menacing her with the falsified report on the death of one of her patients, Peggy Wheaton. But it is only when one night, returning home from work, Abby is shot at several times that she understands that the threat from Colstar is not to be taken lightly...
A very good medical thriller.
Thrilling & well paced book - By: , 24 Sep 2001 I think what I enjoyed most about this book was the wonderful pace skilfully injected at just the right times. If you enjoy the TV show ER you will find traces in the early parts of this book. It gets of to a cracking start & doesn't let up until the end. I did however find the end slightly unsatisfactory with too many loose ends for my liking but nevertheless this book was a worthwhile read.

Michael Palmer depicts hospitals & evil medical staff so brilliantly that if I ever need to be hospitalised in future, the first question I will ask my doctor will be " Are you a Michael Palmer fan?" Every book is a gem & totallly believable. I read Silent Treatment & I was hooked !!!
Read a Palmer thriller and you will want more - By: , 26 Oct 2000 A good rip-roaring read. I took 4 Palmer books on holiday & found myself engrossed in alll of them. This one provides a very fast-paced climax & keeps you guessing about whodunnit.
Excellent story with lots of surprises - By: , 29 Aug 1999 The whole idea of chemical poisoning & a corporate cover-up is intriguing enough, but Palmer makes it even more exciting by adding twists & turns at alll the right times. Every time I thought I figured out what was going on, I was pleasantly surprised to realize I was way off base. Abby's commitment to solving the mystery is fierce. The action is tremendous & it doesn't stop until the last page, as the story races to a thrilling conclusion. This book was difficult to put down. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a chilling mystery novel.
