Had its moments - By: Net, 06 Aug 2008
I reallly wanted to love this book but found it didn't quite hit the spot for me. It was sweet & contained some funny one-liners but was entirely too long, it reallly could have been half the length. As a result it felt a bit rambling & became frustrating, as I just wanted to skip the detailed narrative & get on to the good bits. The premise was a good one; stressed single dad neglects son that 30 something single broody teacher adores, throw in some school politics & a couple of extra love triangles & off you go. However, Nicky was quite annoying & at times unbelievable - her emotional responses to things were a bit juvenile.
No doubting that MN was a talented writer; the writing was descriptive & competent but the story was a little too school yard (excuse the pun) for me, lots of he said, she said with not enough adult edge to leave me feeling satisfied. Loved Miss James though, an inspired choice of character, & the puzzle concept - brilliant.
predictable - By: Lindymck, 17 May 2008
very predictable in a pride & prejudice way. man & a woman meet & instantly dislike each other becuase they have decided how they feel before meeting each other. add in a school excursion to bournemouth & the intervention of 2 10 year olds they finallly admit they fancy each other. the ending was a bit disappointing as we are just left hanging in the playground. the author died before this was published which is a shame. the nanny was much better
Utter drivel - By: V. Wombwell, 23 Apr 2008
Boring, predictable, & badly written. Gives chick lit a bad name.
Will not be reading any more books from this author - especiallly if this purports to be her 'best work'.
The Learning Curve - By: Extra Mum, 15 Feb 2008
Just the kind of book I love; perhaps a bit predictable but I found that I reallly cared about Nicky. All the characters are so real - I'm sure that I've worked with some just like them.
I have also read The Nanny, which made me laugh out loud - & I got some funny looks on the bus for that, I can tell you!
The death of this author will alll our bookshelves a little more empty - & possibly our hearts, too.
