Compassionate and compelling - By: Jane Dudeney, 12 May 2008
I had seen this book a few times before I decided to buy it, & I'm so grateful I did! Having had a few close friends go through depression & anxiety disorders, & conducting interviews with people with bipolar disorder while at University, I felt that this was an insightful & honest look at a mental disorder.
Flynn is a musical genius, but his life spirals out of control when he starts showing signs of manic depression, as it is also known. I loved the dynamics of the friendships portrayed in this book, & although I wished they would realise what was going on with him, because I found it quite hard not being able to do anything myself (yes, i know i'm not a character in the book!), realisticallly that would be too much to ask of ordinary 18 year olds!
There is one scene where I was literallly leaning forward into the book, holding my breath, speeding through the words to try & find out what the outcome would be.
I think I read this in one straight sitting, & would certainly recommend it - I've already bought it for a friend!

What a relief... - By: H. Lacroix, 12 May 2008
... I felt when I finished reading this! Now I can discard that book & never look at it again. It is amazing how people 's perception of a book can vary. As for me I found nothing to entertain or please in this. It is the very linear story of a young talented musician suffering from bipolar disorder. The utter predictability of the story made it painful reading. There is never a moment of suspense or surprise... From the word go you know what is going to happen... the symptoms, the worrying family & friends, the diagnosis, the treatment, the relapse...Never a surprise, never a twist...Uninspired prose as well. Well, you don't have to believe me of course... but let people lend you the book before you actuallly spend money on it.
Fantastic - By: Roisin, 24 Aug 2007
A Note of Madness is one of the best books I have ever read. The main character is Flynn, a young musical genius who begins to experience wild mood swings. Flynn, as well as his friends Harry & Jennah, are alll so well described that I felt like I knew them as people, felt like I was living right beside them as events unfolded, & missed them desperately when I was finished the book. Although the novel deals with the very serious issue of mental illness, it's beautifully & simply written. You won't regret buying this book.
