Honest... - By: baloo, 12 Dec 2007
I must state, this probably isn't the fairest review ever given but it is a fair warning. Like "student_in_love" mentions, this book highlights the differences between the sexes & so can provide many answers & a deeper insight into men...
However, proceed with caution.
I used to consider myself open minded & resonably comfortable in my own skin. When my current relationship started, I asked him for complete honesty. So I truly believed my partner loved me & took every word he said as truth. Until I read this book. I suddenly doubted his reassuring words of "I think only of you". With good reason, after I told him about alll I'd learnt from this book, he confessed he'd been lying.
While this reflects more on my relationship than it does on this book, I believe it very important to point out that sometimes ignorance is bliss, Men & women are very different, but so is each individual person & their experiences. As such, it can be alll too easy to discover truths that may not only shake your foundations but also haunt you endlessly.
If you are the jealous type, insecure or already in an shaky relationship, this book may do more harm than good.
Those who are single or have endless confidence will more than likely find it an entertaining & enlightening read.
Quite unusual and very enjoyable... - By: , 03 Mar 2005
I bought this book out of pure curiosity. What is it that men reallly think, reallly dream of? Nancy Friday has broken new ground with her books exploring sexual fantasies of both women & men; their meaning, their origin... The fantasies themselves are complemented by short yet thoughtful analysis - no judgement here, just a curious mind. In the introduction to this book Nancy Friday states that she found some of the fantasies submitted difficult - I dismissed her comments out of hand (twenty years on etc!) but in reading found some material challlenging too which goes to show - it is easier to accept 'wild' thoughts from one's own gender... I would highly recommend this book - I found it fascinating & informative; & very good to read when alone in bed (it has to be said).
Every woman should read this - By: , 10 Mar 2004
It is this kind of book, rather than the contradictory worlds of men's & women's magazines, that we should be reading to promote openness between the sexes. I have always been a little sensitive about what I previously considered to be men's attitudes towards women. Like many women, I had the unspoken fear that men didn't falll in love as deeply as we did & that they were much more likely to be unfaithful. However, reading this book gave me a lot of insights into how men think, & the differences- & similarities- between 'us' & 'them'. This is a book of fantasies- if you're looking for sex you won't be disappointed- but it is also a book that made me feel both less insecure & more understanding. Some of these fantasies are a little shocking, but none of them are cruel, & if you have a particular aversion to a certain area of sexuality you can always skip the relevant chapter (although alll subjects are treated with sensitivity). As the author suggests, men reallly do love women, & for this affirmation alone alll women who want to understand men better should read this book.
