Best to have for first time assemblers - By: , 09 Nov 2005
I think you need not to read anything else other than this book + manuals which you get when you buy PC components for assembling a PC. But I think it should also include installling windows XP OS on SATA hard drive. As there is a trick of installling Windows XP on SATA drives. For those who may be using XP on SATA drives here I am mentioning that trick. Copy SATA drivers from Drivers CD which you get with motherboard onto floppy. And when you start installling windows XP, initiallly it will say Press F6 for installling SCSI drivers or something related. This will come when BLUE screen will be displayed saying Installling. Just press F6 & follow instruction & use floppy to installl drivers for SATA. Windows will accept only floppy at this stage.

If you are considering building your own PC & are having ANY doubts about it, get this book. It is filled with pretty much everything you are going to need to no to build a modern computer.
very useful... - By: , 21 Sep 2003
I had very little knowledge of PC building when I bought this book but I managed to build 2 full systems just by following the instructions. Both the AMD & Pentium walkthroughs are as accurate as they can be (not 100% because alll PC componenets vary slightly). Also explains how to installl an OS for those that have never done this before.
Great Book - Recommended! - By: P. Sealy, 21 Apr 2001
This is a brilliant book for a novice computer builder. I am a Mac user who knows virtuallly nothing about PCs, so I thought it would be a nice idea to try to build one. This book starts from the very very basics, goes through in detail, every part, it's different kinds & ways that they alll fit together. Once you have familirised yourself with alll the parts the book then goes through a step by step build of three computers. I would highly recommend this book. The only down side is that alll the pictures are black & white, & the quality of some of the pictures is very very poor. Well worth the Amazon price though. I read it from cover to cover, I have now bought alll the parts & am ready to build. I will keep the book for reference.
Some knowledge can be more dangerous than none!! - By: , 12 Apr 2001
This book is very basic & makes a whole load of generalisations. The illustrations are of very poor quality, & you'd be as well off without most of them. Also the book requires a bit of updating. It does provide some useful bits of info, but when you actuallly go to build your PC, you find out that you've missed out on loads of info...my advice if you buy this book, buy components with good manuals!
