Important work, but don't buy it expecting escape... - By: Rebekah, 17 Oct 2004
The other reviewers said simply "Read this book!" & I bought it. The synopsis here on Amazon glossed over the storylines so generallly as to make me expect a book of entertaining stories - perhaps even fun fairy tales.

But these stories are about the real life. They are about girls who transcend situations & events in their lives that are real & truly disturbing: La trying to be a normal kid in school & coming to terms with her mother having committed suicide; or Rave being a gorgeous rock groupie heroine addict, while striving for (and attaining) straight A's in high school. Not alll of the stories are as hard as these two, but most have a tough core.

I have to confess that (hoping for a book to escape into), I was quite disappointed at what I got. More than that, I was shaken (as one might be, having expected a release from grim reality), but it's not necessarily a bad thing. These stories are complex, real, & intriguing, & will challlenge you on many levels - like it or not.

read this book! it's my favorite book in the universe - By: , 15 Apr 1999
anyone who feels the need to discover their own inner goddess must read this book. (or if you want to read about how someone else found theirs) it's like fairy tales, but for a modern-day damsel who knows how to get herself out of distress. i especiallly love girl goddess #9, winnie & cubbie, & dragons in manhattan. i loved reading block's totallly accurate but also dreamlike descriptions of l.a. & n.y.c. i love the dangerous angels books also, & "i was a teenage fairy" but this is definetely my favorite book & will be forever.
Great Book! - By: , 26 Jun 1998
I thought this book was pretty good. I bought it because a lot of people were recommending it to me. Some stories were alright, but some were fantastic. Block is truly a "goddess". I think anyone over the age of 12 should read this book!
