A compelling read and brilliant reference work - By: , 06 Aug 1999
Although I'm personallly convinced that feminine divinities were hugely important in prehistoric times - at least, compared to today - I've grown slightly suspicious of many attempts at 'feminist prehistories'. Often they just seem to swing from one extreme to the other, replacing an alll-powerful male god with & alll-powerful goddess. I think Monica Sjoo often treads close to this territory, but here the acheivement of her collaboration with Barabara Mor far transcends any undue bias she has. I read this with a very careful eye for anti-male sexism, but found next to nothing that could be described as that. Actuallly, most of this makes profound sense, particularly the arguments about shamanism being, originallly, the domain of women (the psychophysical fact of menstruation is the key here, as was shown in Penelope Shuttle & Peter Redgrove's brilliant 'The Wise Wound'). All in alll, a terrific book.
