Read 'Redbreast' First - By: Stella, 24 Nov 2008
The second of Nesbo's fantasitc Harry Hole series of books translated into English, I found it a little bit confusing at first but (and similarly to Redbreast) the plot eventuallly alll came together & climaxed brilliantly.
I'm already well into his next story, 'Devils Star' - although who knows how long we shalll have to wait for the next book to come out in English!
You don't 'have' to read these books in order, but if you do, it will help you understand the mind of Harry Hole & his colourful past that bit better.
very disappointing - By: Ms. R. Maich, 05 Nov 2008
Going by the blurb on the back & the newspaper reviews I was reallly looking forward to this book. I was very disappointed. I don't know if it was a poor translation or what but I reallly couldn't get into it. The story was alll over the place & what I assume was humour fell reallly flat. Despite being translated parts were still in Norwegian & unreadable. This book did nothing for me & I wouldn't read another by this author.
Gripping read - By: Susie N., 25 Oct 2008
My first Jo Nesbo book & I've just ordered two more. Took me a while to get in to it because of the Norwegian references & detail but, to be fair, it did state this at the beginning of the book. Didn't want to put it down because of alll the twists & changes in direction & would happily recommend this to any crime loving reader. Excellent way to spend a couple of hours.
A great read. - By: Josephine Huys, 08 Oct 2008
I was eagerly awaiting the follow-up to Redbreast, which was a fantastic novel, & was not disappointed. Some less inspired writers would find material for at least 2 or 3 different books in that big one ! Nesbo manages very skilfully to merge these different strands into one riveting, tense narrative. I would not recommend it to people in search of light crime reading obviously but definitely to anyone enjoying a strong, solid & involving story to dip in. Contrary to other reviewers, I found the bleak, cold background of Oslo excellent & atmospheric. Again, if it's sun & sand you're after, this is the wrong book. But for a real feel of the North, perfect !
Thrill-tastic - By: M. Sydenham, 05 Oct 2008
I'm sorry, when I saw the other review from my namesake in Italy I just had to reply; "too scandinavian"? "I have never been to Oslo so i felt quite neutral"? er.... right. Sense? This makes none. I've never been to 17th Century Paris but I still enjoyed the Three Musketeers. Obviously no-one had told me that to enjoy a story I had to have some first hand knowledge of the place.
Anyway, Nemesis is a great read & one of those books that you'll pick up & then realise that four hours have gone past (probably best not to read it on a short train journey in that case). Harry Hole's character & Jo Nesbo's fiendishly clever plotting put this head & shoulders above your run-of-the-mill crime fiction & I've no hesitation in recommending it to others. Yes, even if you've never been to Oslo.
