Excellent. Thrilling! - By: Toni Masters, 16 Jul 2007
Waking up at Mrs. Timmin's foundling home, young 12 year old Robert is suddenly overcome by the feeling that he isn't who he thinks he is. This is due to a spell that was cast over him the previous night by Lord Alwyn, a magical wizard who resides in the home. A young girl callled Bea spectated this magical event & tells Robert that his real name is Marcel & his memories had been vanished by Lord Alwyn who had used a certain instrument to get rid of his memories. An instrument callled; The Book of Lies.

The two hunt down the book, sneaking into Alwyn's chamber & stealing it out one night & test out it's magic; it's a magical form of a lie detetctor & any lie that it hears is written over it's pages while the truth glows dimly on it's magical papyrus. Marcel & Bea uncover Alwyn's cruel power & how he had been able to break apart Marcel's life so quickly & give him a new name, a new life & new memories.

They also find out that Alwyn had possessed the same magic over an attractive teen also dwelling in the foundling home; Nicola.

Marcel is contacted later throughout the story in the first few chapters by a powerful figure; Lord Starkey. He wants Marcel to join him for a certain quest. A quest to de-thrown a usurper; King Pelham. He also wants Nicola & Fergus (a strapping, strong boy also residing at the home) to join him on the quest. The rest that follows is a tale of deciet & magic.

James Moloney puts magic into print in the first book of his series. The preque of Master of the Books; The Book of Lies is a tale of deceit, magic & adventure with wizards & dragons & magical characters that enliven the story. The relationships between the characters; Bea & Marcel is loving, yet not romantic, which is refreshing & sweet.

This is an excellent, thrilling, 5-star book & indeed a contendor for J.K Rowling's Harry Potter series that will be coming to an end this year.

Oh my god, stunning or what? - By: , 10 Apr 2005
When i first picked up this book, i didnt think it would b my kinda thing, but wow! if you like fantasy you should definately read this! the reason i only gave this book four stars & not five is cos of the ending. it was a bit abrupt but other than that there's nothing wrong with it! the characters are fab & it's one of those books where you reallly reallly hate the baddies & adore the heroes. come on! Read it!
