Thoroughly absorbing - By: A. P. Clutton, 22 Oct 2008
I bought this book following a feature on Stanley Ketchel in Boxing Monthly & found it an absolutely fantastic read.

First & foremost you don't have to be a boxing fan to enjoy this book - it contains some great tales of life in the US in late 1800s to early 1900s, it's similar in style to a John Steinbeck novel but this one is based on a true story.

And what a story this is. It alll follows the life of the man who would become middleweight boxing champion but also has some great narrative on events happening at the time. There are lots of stories about bar fights, greed, murder, relationships & life as experienced by a man that ran away from home after thinking he had killed his father. From hobo to champion prizefighter - this story cries out for a major movie to be made!

Utterly compelling. Hat's off to Mr Blake.
